How could anyone pass up the 804 trail in Yachats? Its rocky shoreline and ever changing light make it a must. Best wishes.

[quote=btbg]It depends on what your photo interests really are. There are lighthouses at Tillamook Rock, Cape Meares, Yaquina head, Heceta Head, near Sunset Bay, Reedsport, Cape Blanco and Bandon, and two near N. I'm probably missing a couple. Heceta Head's Head lighthouse is particularly scenic both up close and from the other side of the small bay it sits on.

If you like wildlife there are elk near Jewell on the north coast and I think it's Dean's Creek on the south coast.

Good bridges at Astoria, Newport, Coos Bay and Gold Beach.

Best spots for waves Shore Acres State Park, Cape Perpetua, and some of the rocky headlands between Bandon, Cape Kiwanda and Brookings. Otter Point, Boiler Bay and Cape Arago can also be good for waves.

👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻. As a new Oregonian, I love it all. From the Redwoods to the 12 miles of beach trails just north of Brookings, the SandDunes farther north. Whale Watching at at Depoe Bay (love the Clarion Hotel there) on up to Tellamook and the Tellamook Dairy (great icecream and cheese) Cannon Beach then Astoria. Great views from the Astoria Column. Lewis and Clark National Historical Park in Astoria is very good. As previously mentioned, most of the turnouts are on the west (ocean side) of HWY 101. Lots to see and do. Enjoy

Cannon Beach, Cape Perpetua, plus the small beach south of Cape Perpetua area has great view up the coast. Lots of stop and shoot spots along 101. Florence for dunes and sea lion caves. Depoe Bay for fishing fleet and whale watching tours, plus iconic bridge there. Spend a whole day at Perpetua - accessible tidal pools, waves crashing, Devil's Churn. Go up top, too, to the visitor center - you might see whales, plus great view of Churn from upper road.

Haven't been to Brookings for awhile, but vaguely think there are great rocks and photos there, too.

Can't tell you where to stay since our favorite places are either burned down (Bayview Motel in Newport) or bulldozed for condos (Shamrock Lodgettes in Yachats south of Newport).

I have 5 days to photograph the Oregon Coast.

What suggestions for which places to stop, and where to stay overnight.

There is a MESS of information about the coastal road in Oregon. Just google it and you will get a TON of information. If in doubt, you can also go to tripadvisor.com on individual towns you will travel through. Try googling "Oregon Coastal Road" or "Oregon Coastal Road Adventures".

If you swoop down to the bottom half of the Oregon coast pick up Crescent City Beach which was where the tsunami swept away part of the town in 1964. It is a good anchor point working north.

CAMERA EQUIPMENT THEFT RAMPANT AT ALL WAYSIDES AND PARKING LOTS ON THE COAST. Most are posted so by law enforcement.

I concur with most of the references you have been given are good. Good and FAR too many for five days on the Oregon Coast. I lived about 100 miles from the coast and spent almost half the weekends for 15 years at and on the Coast. Unbelievable beauty.

After some time my Coastal vehicle was an old rusty Chevrolet Suburban with a steel and padded box welded to the floor near the tailgate. Even then I lost some glass from break-ins and attempted theft. The Oregon Coast Meth-heads can pop a trunk or SUV in minutes.

Keep your gear out of sight. An SUV is not your friend in these situations. Sorry for the wet blanket warning, but one break-in while you are on the other side of the dunes, ruins a whole vacation. Again, don't be unconcerned about the posted pilfering.

You have had many good suggestions, both brief and very comprehensive. I live on the north central coast in Lincoln City that is a major tourist destination for people from Portland and Salem in particular. The entire coast line of over 325 miles offers fantastic views. It is best to start at the north end and drive south so the ocean is easier to see and be able to quickly pull off the Oregon Coast Hwy (101) if a view catches your eye. I am partial to the Florence area that has cliffs similar to the Big Sur area as well as the seal lion caves. North of that, Newport offers an aquarium that will provide an overview of all of what the Oregon Coast has to offer in terms of sea creatures and their habitats. In the winter months it should not be difficult to find available accommodations in oceanfront motels and BandBs. If you want to reserve a room in advance, anyplace along the coast will be an adventure. You can do the entire coast with photo stops and good meals in 3 days, but any amount of time you can spare beyond that will be easy to fill. There are many city, county, state and national parks along the coast with trails, rivers, waterfalls, estuaries and bays and most all of the beaches are accessible and dog friendly. Enjoy.

bsprague is right: Stephanie Inn is a fabulous place to stay. Very expensive on weekends, pricy the rest of the time. Absolutely fabulous food. Fills up quickly, good chance you would need reservations. As it is in Canon Beach, you have a number of things to do/see there -- the biggest Haystack Rock the one nat Pacific City is smaller, but also huge), Ecola Beach Park, etc. On your way to the coast or on the way back, the air museum in McMinneville is fantastic. They have Howard Hugh's monstrous wood flying boat (used to be in Long Beach, CA) and a Blackbird as well as other neat stuff.

In Ft Stevens State Park you can see what is left of the wreck of the Peter Iredale, an old ship now mostly rusted away but providing some interesting views.

Also you might want to go to the Devil's Punchbowl. If you can get the waves and tide right, it provides a spectacular spout of water.

And there are several lighthouses available.

PS Ft Stevens also offers a lot of old military artifacts that can be interesting.

Umm. To pick a nit, there are no national parks along the Oregon coast. Oregon's only national Park is Crater Lake, quite a ways inland. Nice place but not on the coast.

There is also a walk-through wildlife park in Bandon, very interesting. Many exotic deer walk around among the visitors and there are large cats in cages. When I took my family there, they even had a baby tiger that they allowed visitors to pet (carefully).

And farther inland is Wildlife Safari, a huge wildlife park. Most people drive through but during the summer at least the offer walking tours.
