Nice. Question: When shooting hockey venues, with all that bright ice and white surrounds, do you have to work as though you were in snow?

Being indoors seems to balance out the snow. Nothing special i guess.

Great shots.I take a lot of photos of Our grandson who has been playing hockey since he was 4.I shoot with a Nikon 610 & a Nikon 28-300 lens.I have never heard of using a 50mm lens.May I ask how close are you to the ice? Do you shoot through the glass as the rest of us do or do you have media privileges?

I am sitting in the first row of the stands shooting through the glass. I use the 50 f1.4 or my 85 f1.8 for indoor sports. Works great to get the shutter speed up, freezes the action clearly and allows for some cropping in Lightroom.

May I ask what do you do if your team is flying down the ice to the other net,or do you just stay where your teams net is? I have a 50mm maybe I will try it tonight when our grandsons team starts the Baron Cup championship.Thanks for the tips!🏒

So far for hockey I typically stay in the end where my team is shooting. I like the side I shoot from as I'm up just a bit
above the ice, the glass is pretty clear and the goalie play is pretty interesting. The 50mm frames the action right in front
of the net pretty well. From that location the 85 is a little tight unless you only want shots of one player really.
I use the 85 when I stand behind the goalie. It gives nice shots of players coming right at you. It's not good for anything
past center ice though, and then you are really just shooting their backs anyway.

I've been focusing on getting shots where the puck is really obvious, it's an elusive creature.
I always try to shoot the first picture just before I want a particular shot and then the next couple
shots of burst may have some celebration or a certain expression.

Thank you! Hopefully I can make the next game on Saturday. I will try some different things
on that one and maybe shoot pics for an entire period. My son has to shoot some as well
and do the coach interview for an article he needs to write for a sports writing class he's taking.
That will be fun comparing shots!

It's a great lens when you are in dark situations. The 50mm 1.8 reviews just as well and is a bit
cheaper. I love shooting with primes, maybe having to zoom lets me concentrate and anticipate
the action. I have a 35mm f1.8 that I may try using this weekend to capture a larger view
of the shooter, puck and goalie all at once. I also shoot volleyball and in the dark gyms
primes are the only way I can get clear pics with the ball frozen in the frame.

These are really nice shots! Sharp and WB seems to be right on. These would be excellent if shot real tight in camera. Good action shots I shoot for MaxPreps.com, Jules does also. They want all shots real tight in camera and no cropping in any post work. After shooting for awhile that way I can say it makes a big difference (night/day) difference. I realize with the 50MM and 85MM you are limited but when they get close to your side against the boards click away, tight shots and you will see how much better they look. Keep up the good work and post more. Thanks

Thanks! Will do. I shot a few more this weekend that I will post tonight, a little tighter. I really need to commit to
shooting a full game with the camera rather than try to enjoy the game, I miss a lot of good shots. I'm getting a lot
better at shooting tighter right out of the camera rather than relying on PP.
