1) Can anyone that owns a camera be a great photographer ?
2) Do you need to be a super intelligent (PHD) person or not?
3) Does better equipment make a better photographer?
4) Why do you think of rude comments?
Vision and awareness are the two most important things.
*groan* (could have been a much ruder comment)

1) No! Anyone that takes pictures is a photographer but not neccesarily a great one.
2) No! In my experience great photographers are not really very intelligent.
3) No! Better equipment does help taking better pictures but the photographer is the same not better. That is there could be a great photographer but takes lousy pictures because his camera is too bad.
4) What rude comments you're talking about? What that has to do with photographer good or bad?

1. Yes, just as anyone who owns a football CAN be a great player for the NFL. But 99% will not be. If they satisfy their own quest for photographs that is wonderful in itself.
2. Absolutely not. Photography is basically an art form and while you can learn many of the, "Rules of Photography", such as the rule of thirds, it is still up to your eye and mind to, "see", what it is that will make the photograph good or bad.
3. Not at all. Better equipment MIGHT give you better opportunities for a greater picture but not necessarily.
4. Are you asking Why or do you really mean What? Why is totally dependent upon the person and we are all different. What is something we all should be against regarding rude comments. Rude is just that, rude. It is never helpful to anyone.

Primarily self promotion.

The first three questions are superfluous.
Rude comments can be entertaining, and inciteful; and might be more meaningful than patronizing comments.
Although it won't guarantee greatness, PRACTICE is a good first step in any learning endeavor.
Varying (bracketing) your settings will help you learn what all those settings do and how they change the picture. When you learn how they change the picture you can harness that knowledge and newly found experience to start improving and getting the results you want.
Be thankful you are setting out to learn this in the Digital Age. You can practice intensely with thousands of shots and see your results on the spot for the cost of reformatting your memory card. I used to buy film in 100' rolls, spool it down and then have to process the shots.
Take your camera out and shoot pictures!

If you're just doing it for yourself, yeah you can be your own great photographer, if you want to be making a living of it, than you have to be a great business person, photography then, takes on a second role!

1) Yes
2) No
3) No; Better equipment just makes it easier for great photographers to make great photos.
4) I'm assuming you meant "What", not "Why". There are great photographers that have great matching personalities, and then there are the others starting at the great personalities and going down from there. Rude comments are rude comments. Some are very intentional and some are not. Some do it on purpose and/or for a purpose. If one recognizes they have been truely rude, they should try to make amends being sentient beings. Even if there is no way to truely make amends, one should still try. Sometimes I feel l have to give the "benefit of the doubt" for some people as to being sentient beings.

Thanks for correcting my #4 question. Some here think they know more than the rest of us so, they are quick to say demeaning & disrespectful comments. So what do we think of such conduct? Why are they like that? What satisfaction do they get from putting someone down?

1.
Could be
2. Actually, there seem to be two types of great photographers, but neither requires intelligence per se
a. Ansell Adams types who see possibilities in setting and work at it until they get it
b. "Weegee" Fellig types who instinctively shoot when special situation presents itself
3. No, but it helps. These days if you post a good picture taken with an Instamatic 100, someone will suggest you sharpen it.
4. Is this question a result of behavior here??

As for the title question, I don't know why it takes.

Lee must have trusted his smart phone but didn’t double check. He obviously meant “what”
