I primarily like taking pictures of landscapes, buildings, people walking by, etc. I also like taking close ups, but neither seem very good at close distances. Great lenses but just wondering what people use as their primary set up. I use either my D300 or D7100 with either/both lenses.

My main walk around lens on my FX camera is a 50mm.
For a DX camera the 35mm would render the same field of view as a 50mm.

Why not carry the other lens around in a coat pocket?

The 35mm lens should be your most used lens. 85mm is a short tele that sees lots of use as a portrait lens, not meaning that the 35mm cannot do the job but it is not ideal like the 85mm for head and shoulder portraits.
When I travel and I take my DX body with me I prefer using a wide to moderate tele zoom, something like the 18-70 or the 18-200.

Thanks for all of the responses....very helpful! Lots of options that I can start taking a look at. Why must there be so many lenses out there!! :) So is the 16-80 better than the 16-85?

Yes. It is the quality kit lens for the D500. But, the 16-85mm is also a very good lens. Those two lenses have been debated on this forum. Not very long ago. The 16-80 came out the slight winner.

Anyone from Penn State is already welcome here. I am sure you have already received a lot of advice. I would carry both lenses with me until I bought a zoom lens. And the zoom lens that I would buy would be the Nikon 16-80 mm Nikon DX lens.

This comes remarkably close to your question:

For prime walk around on a dx camera, 35mm. If space and weight permit, I would take the second lens, or take two cameras. I use a 24mm and an 85mm, with a dx and an fx camera when space and weight permit.

Interesting and quick article that seems to resonate what a lot of folks are saying. Definitely a conundrum when it comes to the different lenses. I just need to get out of my own head and focus (no pun intended) on taking pictures and not so much on what lens I DON'T have with me. :)

I used to carry around a sling bag with multiple lenses and what I found was that I was worries about swapping lenses and not actually framing the shot. It's kind of like Lord of the Rings in which I am looking for the "One Ring to Rule Them All," being the one set up that I can be happy with :)

For effective use of primes, I have a similar issue--which is why the two camera solution works best if circumstances permit. Otherwise, I just use a 50mm equivalent.

And sometimes it's good to only have 1 lens and force myself to think about my photos

Years ago, I purchased a 43~86 f/3.5 and that was my primary lens for quite a long time. Lately, I've migrated to a 28~85 f/3.5 or a 28~300 f/3.4-4.5 with the latter being on the camera more often.

Seriously, rent a 16-80mm f/2.8-4 and see how it performs. This lens seldom leaves my D7200. Cameta Camera sells them refurbished at a great price. New they run over $1000.

"This Nikon 16-80mm VR has the best Vibration Reduction (VR) I've tested. It's also extremely sharp, a stop faster than most zooms (f/2.8~4), and focuses extremely closely.

Its high speed and outstanding VR (image stabilization) makes it easy to get perfect shots in any light. I get perfectly sharp shots most of the time at 1/4 of a second hand-held!

If 80mm is long enough for you (it is for me), this new 16-80mm is Nikon's best do-everything lens for Nikon's DX cameras.

Move the focus ring at any time for instant manual focus override.

You can buy different zooms, but you can't buy better."....Ken Rockwell
