" We couldn't help but wonder if the vole was inside calling for help."

A live critter in the stomach (craw) of an egret could cause damage. The bird would undoubtedly kill it's victim before making a meal. Anyway the bird's craw would make short work of grinding the meal quickly, so the vole would have little time to consider it's plight.

That is a great sequence, thanks for posting it.

As we pulled into the parking lot, the Great Egret grabbed a vole and flew over to a reed island. We watched as the meal was subdued, washed in the water, and devoured quickly. We couldn't help but wonder if the vole was inside calling for help.

Katydid, good eye, excellent series. Very observant. It is what makes great photos.

JB, thanks for your comments! I think photo 3 may have been the head crusher. I have not too much sympathy for voles who have tried to take over my garden on several occasions.

Thanks to every one of you for commenting on my photos. I am a newbie to this, have struggled for a while figuring it out, and am happy to be getting better, slowly.

Unique that he caught a mouse then went to the water to consume it. Good pictures with fine detail.
