iPhone 7-8 camera performance experiences

Hi, I'm hoping to upgrade from a worn out iPhone 5. I'm a former studio owner and always shooting, even though I no longer shoot pro do to disability. With back & neck surgeries the camera always with me is my iPhone.

If you shoot regularly with an iPhone 7 or 8 and make prints, what's been your experience? How large can you print a well exposed & post processed file. Do the 7&8 allow raw files?

Is the dual lens of the plus model worth the $100 difference?

If you've upgraded from a 7 to an 8 is the low light performance significant.

Research told me the 8+ is the same rear camera as the 10.

Before people tell me about the lowly chips in a phone, I'm well aware. I've taken images that are meaningful to me with my 5.

But the main motivation is to capture images and video, easily of my grandson. His mom takes images of him all the time with her first 5c and now 7. When I break out my dslr he shuts down. But an iPhone is invisible to him.

Next is taking pictures of found images, things I find interesting in everyday. Sunsets, cars, bumper stickers, odd mannequins, clouds, etc. And yes my cat 🐱.

Besides being always with me the next best reason for a smartphone is the ability to do a quick edit and share with family. We get 1-3 new images of the grandson every day with a cute watch me grow message.

Finally if not an iPhone what's the best small P&S in the $5-600 range.

In the past I had a Canon G10 & G11. I'm sorry I traded my G11 to KEH.

Thanks, Spiney-Dave

If quick sharing is important to you, I’d go with an iPhone. Eventually you’ll replace your phone anyway, so that would save you money. If you get a P&S camera, you have to upload etc... How big do you want to print? Larger than 8x11? I would also get the latest phone and the plus version also has IS. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. In general I wouldn't generally go past 8x12 but if I was lucky to make a great scenic or panoramic I could see going to at least 11x14. I didn't realize that some phones had IS.

Just purchased an iPad Pro that has the camera from the iPhone 7. Haven’t tried it yet. If I were to get a new iPhone, I’d get the X.

Hi Dave,

I use my iPhone all the time to scratch my photography itch. The iPhone 8+ has the same HW as the iPhone X but the image processing may be slightly different between the two. IMO and from my experience, I think the 7 or 8 would be more than adequate for what you've described.

My wife has the 7+ and its very similar to my X in IQ. Actually, I can't tell the difference.

Just recently upgraded from the 6+ to the X primarily for the camera. As you would expect, the first thing I did was go out and shoot some pics. I posted them here on the UHH if you want to check out IQ. You can even have Costco print them at your desired print size before investing in new phone.

If you want examples from the 7+, send me a PM and I'll be happy to help you.

Good luck with your decision
Mike

I'd get an iPhone 8 plus with the twin camera. For a short time, before the 10 and Googles Pixel came out the 8 Plus was "the best phone camera in the world" according to various publications I read. I use an iPhone 6 and as soon as I can will go to the iPhone 8plus and my 6 will go to my wife. (In truth she should have the 8 and I'll keep the 6 and that's what I'll do - she takes great photos with her 4S).

I don't know if the 8 camera shoots raw but I use an app called "ProCamera" on my 6 which allows me to shoot RAW, it also gives me manual control over ISO, Aperture, speed, EV and lots of other stuff. It's not expensive and you can get it on the App Store. Has built in horizon and a 2x zoom. I like it a lot.

I hope this info helps you (I would not by the Google phone - they like snooping too much and their phone will help them)

Good luck.

Thank you for your replies. We went with the 8+, actually two because AT&T is running a BOGO sale. Just got them tonight but they will stay in the box until we get cases & screen covers. I've always used Otterbox cases & Zagg film covers. This time for now I went with Speck grip cases & Zagg Glass + Luxe screen protectors. You can drive yourself nuts reading reviews. 80% say it's the best thing ever and 12% say it's The Worst ever, just enough to put doubt in your mind. I almost went with Glass Screen protectors that were $7.99/2 with thousands of very good reviews. Made by JTech I think.

I wish they made a case with a place for a lanyard.

So follow up questions: what cases & screen protectors if any do you use & like? Do you pay for an extended warranty for your Smartphone? Apple care is $150 for 2 years or $10/month. They'll replace a broken screen for $48 instead of $400. I'm going to call my home insurance agent to see what they offer. They currently cover my DSLR & lights for a reasonable yearly fee. Thanks.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, & Happy Holidays to you all

Merry Christmas and Happy new year to you and your family also.

Good to hear a decision is made. I hope it works out well for you.

Just a followup to one of your questions about raw files. The 8+ will save in raw but Apple's native camera app won't, you need a 3rd party camera app to do this. There are many excellent options in the app store and only cost a few dollars.

Can't help regarding the extended warranty, that's a risk tolerance issue that's personal to you. My risk tolerance may not be anywhere close to your's. However, I do always use a case and screen protector and after many many drops have never broken a phone. Screen protector yes, phone no. But that's just me.

Good luck with your other research and future decisions.
