Very bad thing. Some programs (log) and send your keystrokes to another place, all keystrokes, which if you are buying something, everything you type......

(That's Key Largo in Florida. )

From other articles....

The key logger was disabled (but could be easily activated).
HP has already released patches and their webpage with the fixes had a release date or 07-Nov-2017.

Even though the information is over a month old, there are probably now still lots of HP Laptops with this easily exploitable security risk. If you have one of the models listed on the HP site, you should immediately update the bad driver. (and now that the word is out, there will be those trying to exploit this issue)

Must be HANDS ON to activate - so unless you leave your laptop sitting unattended in a public space, no issues -

Wrong!!! If anyone hacks Your laptop all I takes is a simple hacker program to activate the switch that is in the registry. Anymore Your computer is at risk the moment You turn it on.

Another thing. I have not been on the hog very long, but I have picked up 2 malware/virus's through private messages on the hog already. I know how to clear them from My computer because I went to a community college and took a 2 year Associates Degree in programming, and I custom build gaming computers. Good high end ones. I have been debating whether or not to say anything about the 2 attacks because I am new here and I didn't want to ruffle any feathers. No offense to the bird photographers. I would suggest everyone use a good internet security program like Eset and CCleaner and Malwarebytes to protect their machines. Wouldn't You know My license ran out recently and I thought I would be alright for another month until after Christmas expenses before I renewed My license. I tried the free AVG. Big mistake; not the first time AVG has let attackers through the system!

A keylogger will track every key You type on Your keyboard. Buying something online? The keylogger will capture Your credit card numbers as You type them and send that info to the hacker. Boom!!! There goes Your bank account balance.

Is it only laptop? I just purchased a desktop HP. Should receive it tomorrow via UPS. I was surprised it was being built in China and not in US.

I am not sure about desktops. Laptops are all that was mentioned. Just My personal feelings, but I wouldn't buy any computer made by HP. They are over priced for the lack of quality that is in their parts and they are too proprietary. Too hard to upgrade!

Thanks for your response. Yes, HP is expensive... but what isn't expensive these days? Where I live (outside of Portland, Oregon) housing cost including rental properties has skyrocketed. For example, our house has increased in value nearly $200,000 in three years. I guess it's the sign of the times. As for upgrading, our son is like you. He is the family computer go to guy. Take care and have a good day.
