Two things here:

1 I think it was already mentioned but Capture One Pro has had many automatic corrections tools and for years! I say "I think it was already mentioned..." because with all the talk about post-this and post-that, I never read all the sub-comments and likely skipped over things of importance.

2) Why doesn't the moderator delete all the comments about "post" since that was totally not the subject of this question from the OP!

I prefer a Jack, but could we say that maybe production consists of the changes you can make using the firmware built into professional cameras such as the Image Enhancement features in Nikon and Canon cameras and that post production is what is done once the images are transferred from the camera to the computer?

Image Enhancement? Not being a Canikon afficianado, does it turn those cameras into a sort of point & shoot?

Yes. DXO programs do for barrel distortion. At least for the camera/lens combinations that they have profiled. Perspective distortion you have to adjust yourself using the DXO tools.

I wouldn't want to fix perspective "distortion"; that is what I see. Would you also want to "fix" the effect of railroad tracks coming together in the distance? {it is exactly the same effect}

As one of the authors of those post posts, I have no problem with them being deleted and apologize for allowing myself to be pulled into it.

As to the OP, there are two parts to correction, one is correction based on the known issues of a given lens and the other are tools designed to correct for observed issues in the images. Many of the programs mentioned use both approaches.

However, one generally is pleasing while the other is not.

I had to think a bit about what you say here, because you are correct. However, whilst horizontal distance perspective gives us a three dimensional feel of depth, which looks and feels natural, for some reason vertical distance perspective rarely does. Is it because most often, when photographing a high building, we would prefer to do it from half way up to avoid perspective distortion? therefore we correct that which we would have avoided if possible?

Perspective correction, like any other technique or tool, is something you use to attain the goal you are after. Just because I would not use perspective correction to "fix" railroad tracks has nothing to do with using it to keep the lines of a building parallel. The argument is sort of like saying , "I would not use a sledge hammer to build a wall, so why would I use it to knock down a wall?"
