I wanted to get a grip. Some of the reviews on this item are abysmal though! Anyone on here have this? I need some real-world knowledge.

I have various Vello Brand items that I've bought in the past. All worked satisfactory. However, I have heard bad things about Vello Battery Grips not being a good fit. One person said he modified his to fit correctly on a Nikon. The Nikon Battery Grips are expensive. I don't know anything about Sony Brand Grips. There are other aftermarket Battery Grips. But I don't know if they are as bad as the Vello.

It adds bulk to the camera to steady it better. Especially, in the vertical position. And if you shoot at the burst rate continuously, your battery pack will last longer. And some say, it just plain looks professional. I personally don't need one.

For me, mainly the extra battery.
The grip also has a set of primary controls that are on the top right when shooting portrait mode.
(I added a wrist grip which makes it easy to carry in my hand with little hand fatigue.)

I have two Vello grips l use for my Sony a99m2 and my Sony a77m2. Never had a problem using the vertical grips. They are a copy of the Sony original for a cheaper price and are worth every penny of it.

Purchasex both of mine tbru B & H Photo. Have also purchased extra batteries when l ordered the grips. Each grip is loaded and l never know when l will run out of power on a massive photo shot. I take railroad photos for calender and public relations displays. This is where a massive photo shot comes in, and sometimes even movies for my own personal pleasure.

genuine batteries or knock-offs? I got after-market batteries for another camera I have and they (nor the replacements) worked correctly.

Get the ones made for the camera. I do not buy knock offs. I buy batteries made by the factory for the camera they last longer and stand behind the factory l year replacement warrenty. You buy what you pay for. Buy cheap knock offs and thgey last q month and don't hold charge and return them for other ones thhat do thge same. Look at the postage money you spent to send them back which you will never see. By factory batteries for your camera equipment. Would you buy a knock off battery for you car?
