This is disappointing. I have a Garmin DriveAssist 50, a great GPS. Unfortunately, it caused me a lot of trouble yesterday. I was wanted to drive from one town to another, about 25 miles to the south - with no tolls. I had driven this route twice before, so I had a general idea how to get there. The GPS said it would take 2 1/2 hours. It wanted me to drive north to Albany and get on the Thruway (toll road) and then drive south. The GPS was set to "Avoid Tolls." I head south and hoped the GPS would find its mistake and get the correct directions. No such luck.

It kept giving me directions to turn around and head north. I turned it on and off, and canceled the route and reentered, but it kept wanting to go north. The strange thing is that it would show the distance to to the town as 17 miles, but the driving time as two hours - with that trip north. Fortunately, I had another GPS with me, and that got me there on time. It wasn't till I was about two miles from the town that the newer GPS figured it out and gave me the right directions.

I'm not expecting any of you to have a solution, but I hate to think this could happen again. I'll contact Garmin and let you know if they have an solution.

Not sure there is a solution. I had the same problem with mine. I wanted to go from Indianapolis to Elizabethtown KY via a scenic route. No hurry I didn't have to be there until the next morning. It kept wanting to route me through Cincinnati Ohio. Just pulled out the paper maps and planned my own trip.

This is disappointing. I have a Garmin DriveAssis... (show quote)

Hi Jerry;

Have had that same problem with my Garmin Nuvi 260W until I found a menu setting under the "Navigation" menu item "Route Preference" with three choices: Faster Time, Shorter Distance, Off Road. It was originally set to Shorter Distance, so I changed it to Faster Time and that seemed to solve my issue.

I am not familiar with your particular model Jerry, so what I am suggesting may not be applicable to your model.
Best of luck, Garth

Hope you get it figured out.

I have had this happen a couple of times with a couple different models but they sorted things it by themselves.

The good thing is Garmin's customers service is great or it was when I had trouble with my Nuvi-750 during an update it quit working just after the warranty was up, I called customer service and they sent me a new one and they paid the return shipping.

Mine also gets confused from time to time - I have a Nuvi1360. But, I haven't had it take me in an opposite direction. What I learned over a sort time after getting mine was look at a map first.

I'll call tomorrow and see what they say. I called once before, and they got me straightened out.

Waze only works well in cities. It relies on information from users. So not as reliable in less populated areas.

Google Maps was kinda wonky last night too. There was a strong solar wind and that could have effected GPS thingys as well as effecting communications.

Be that as it may, I used it on a trip from Enid, OK to Indianapolis, IN and had no problems. (YMMV)

I use a paper map usually, GPS is only really good for the "last mile".
I do use my Garmin for a speed checker never for route finder.
I do have "HERE" maps on my phone but only use it when not driving in the UK, Here is entirely free and does not use any data.
