Hi everyone,

I am getting back into serious photography for the first time since the late 80’s. That’s right! I’m ready for the culture shock of the dslr! My all time favorite camera was the Canon AE-1. I’ve asked for a Nikon D3400 for Xmas to get me started in this new century, lol. Happy to have found this forum.

Greetings. You'll find that digital "film" is really cheap. Happy shooting.

Welcome to UHH. Excellent Christmas present. I hope you get it. Depending one what medium you used back in the 80s, you'll find some things quite similar. Others, will be completely opposite. Regardless, have fun and enjoy.

Really? Let's see. The new Nikon D850 is priced at $3300, body only.
That equates to:
30,000 frames of 35mm Ilford Delta 400
19,411 frames of Ilford FP4+ 120
2,200 sheets of Ilford FP4+ 4x5

I could shoot and develop a lot of film photos for the price of the 'free' film used in a D850.

If you've got that much time please go ahead. As someone who started in the darkroom, I really appreciate the DSLR.

yeah, but how many throw out shots are you paying for? with digital you just delete. I remember shooting 36 shot rolls and I'd be happy with a couple of keepers. the others were just wasted money. nope, I do not miss film.

Well, let's see. On a recent trip to Canyon De Chelly, I took 7 photographs, 5 film and 2 digital. The first two were duplicates because I wasn't sure if the developer was still useable. I tested it with the first exposure. Of the 5 non duplicates, all are now printed. The last was two digital photos that were posted here. I'd say that was about average. I still have to develop the second of the first two photos. I'll do that when I return from another trip this weekend.

As you can see from later posts on your thread, many times a thread will degenerate in to petty bickering that has nothing to do with the original post.

Welcome to the forum. The D3400 is a nice small inexpensive DSLR to get you going in digital photography. Pick up a good book or two on digital photography and read them and get out and practice and have fun. Like someone said, digital film is cheap (since there isn't any).

Welcome to UHH! I too got back into it after the 80's - it is definitely a nice surprise though! The D3400 is perfect to get back into the game - have fun!
