I plan to buy a Nikon D750 before Christmas. I'm looking for a couple of "used" lenses to start with and will purchase new lenses as funds become available. Any suggestions for the best lenses for general photography will be greatly appreciated.
I would consider a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D lens. You may purchase it new for $132. The Nikon 24-85mm kit lens with VR is very good for the price. If you have a mind to try an older manual focus lens, a Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 lens would be nice for portraits. If you can do without VR, maybe the basic 70-300mm lens for under $170.
I use and like the newer version of the Tamron 28-300mm. Lastly, there are good deals on the Tamron 45mm f/1.8.
If you are getting a D750, you owe it to yourself to get at least one good or very good prime. The best two prime kit, in my view, is the Nikon 24mm and 85mm f/1.8 G lens combo.

What do you like to shoot?
Avoid any superzoom - from Nikon, Tamron Sigma - the 28-300mm category of lenses are all pretty awful. They may seem ok at first, but when compared to other lenses that cover parts of the zoom range, the shorter zooms are substantially better, and really show up the flaws in the 28-300-class lenses. The only one that may be worth considering is the Canon L version, which isn't half bad and costs $2200, but it's a moot point since it won't work on Nikon.
Two decent sites that offer thorough, factual and neutral reviews that will provide good data for a properly informed purchase decision:
http://www.photozone.de/https://photographylife.com/reviewsI strongly second Jerry's recommendation for a used 80-200 F2.8 AF-D. I bought one 10 yrs ago for $500, I just dropped it last weekend at a small job, and Nikon is fixing (refurbishing) it for $300. Great value, works well on every camera I have used it with, from a D70S to a D810.

Look at AF-D lenses, they are cheap and good.
Also you should look for the 28-80 3.3-5.6 G lens. It is a very good zoom lens from the film era that works perfectly on your D750 and costs almost nothing. Sharp, light weight and instant focusing is the pros of this lens. And it is almost free, you can find it any day for $50 or less on Ebay. Buy one. You can also get it in black if that matters.

Stay away from manual lenses if you are new to photography with a dslr or not used to them. It is easier for you to learn with autofocus lenses and you have the option of focusing them manually also if you want.
I suggest you go for the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 G lens. It's a little more $$ but generally acknowledged as a better lens that the "D". I have one and I love it for all around shooting.
You definitely should get something that covers the 50mm focal length, whether a 50mm prime or a zoom that covers that length. Thanks I’ve personally been sceptical about super zooms, but I trust Jerry's opinions a great deal.
I echo the recommendation of the Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens. It's a very good general purpose lens and is equal to the f1.4 50mm lens once you get past about f5.6. I would also recommend the older AF Micro Nikkor 60mm f2.8 macro lens which is available for about $250 as I recall. I would go to B&H and search their used lens selection. It's a great lens which is extremely sharp.

For my first FF camera I bought a Nikon 50mm f1.4 D lens and have no reservations about it. I found that the 24-70 didn't do much at 70mm and so sold it and then bought used on EBay from sellers with 100% feedback Nikons - 18-35 and a very inexpensive 80-300 (mainly to see how much I used this one). Not yet sure about which long zoom I want to end up with. I'm perfectly satisfied with the 50 and the short zoom.

I think the key here is to buy inexpensive used lenses until you are sure just what you really want and then spend the money for really good "lifetime" investment in glass.
A kit lens that came with my Nikon 6006 was the 35-80mm f4-5.6 (not to be confused with the f4.5-5.6!!). This is a sweet lens that covers a nice range and is available for sale used for about $65. Just google it.

I would start with:
Sigma 24-135mm f2.8-4.5 - about $265 on ebay
Tamron SP 28-105 f2.8 - " " " "
or, for a bit more money, the Sigma 24-105 f4 - about $650 used on ebay.
..
It's a good deal now for the D750. It's $1499 with the battery grip so it's the same price as the D610 and the battery grip is extra on the D610.

If you can find a used 24-120 in good shape,I think you will enjoy it’sspeed, sharpness and color rendition. I enjoy using mine.
Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'm really excited about this new camera!
