I would like to upgrade to a new camera and am considering the 750 or 810.
Can I still use the DX lenses from my D90 on the new FX camera?
I shoot portraits and families!

Why would you want to use DX lens on full frame. Get a D7500 or D500 and use DX. DUH.

Yes they will work on either just remember your pictures will not be captured in full frame.

You can use them like a DX lens on a heavier body and at around 12 mp on the D750 and18mp on the D810, then start acquiring FX lenses.

Your DX lenses will have severe vignetting when used with FX cameras. Some FX cameras will detect when a DX lens is mounted and automatically crop the portion of the sensor used, wasting 40% of your expensive sensor. Zoom lenses are only affected by the vignetting progressively towards the wider end of the zoom range.

Yes, you can but I would not recommend that you do that. DX lenses are made to work best with cropped sensors like your D90. FX lenses can be used with DX cameras but they work best with FX bodies.
Since you want a D750 or a D810, both of which are expensive cameras you will need FX lenses. I do not know if you have other DX lenses but if you do you will save money at the long run buying another DX body and a refurb or used D7200 surely will fit the bill.
If you have money to burn then go for the D500.

As someone who went from the D90 to the D7100.. then up to a FF camera, what the previous replies say, I add my voice (ok, font).. to theirs. When you can get the FX lenses you need, then go to the FX camera.

I do not believe you could go wrong with either choice. As far as the lens goes they can be used but there will be compensations that will have to be continually adjusted. I had the reverse and used FF lens on a D90 until I bought the D750 and l had to multiply the focal lenght by 1.5 to be true. So a 200mm lens was equivalent to 300. I do not know what the exact factor exchange would be the other way.

Buy the 810--you use your DX lenses on it. Then, in time, start acquiring FX lenses.
Then you will be happy.

Exactly what I was thinking. Some people are jackasses and just don't care how people see them. Must be a lonely soul with few friends in real life.

Unless you have a pressing need to shoot a full frame body, you should look at the professional quality D500 which is a DX camera and will work well with the lenses that you already have. Future glass acquisition will also be DX and you’ll find this route much more cost effective.

The D810 is the best choice for many reasons.
You can use DX lenses on either camera you are considering. The size of the image will likely be smaller that full frame.
For portraits and families there is no reason to upgrade to full frame, but if you do, the D7200/D7500/D500 are about as good as they get. Better lenses will almost always help improve image quality.

Both cameras are excellent and yes you can use DX lenses on either camera but you better do some intense research unless you absolutely must satisfy your GAS attack. Just saying.

Wow can't believe all the free amazing advice!!THANKS! You all rock!
One more question for the DUH dummy...
I really want to step up the quality of my photos... I capture amazing stuff with my families and kiddos but using a D90 The quality is just not there.
Question: Will I be stepping up my equipment enough by settling for a DX D500 (I can use all the DX lenses that I currently have) or should I invest in the FX 750 and acquire FX lenses slowly but surely!!
