I have a friend who talked about getting Photoshop Elements. I suggested finding a slightly older version where you could get a CD so that if your computer crashes, you can reload it off the CD instead of hoping you could still download it from Adobe. In looking on line, it appears finding something from Adobe is becoming more scarce... Is that correct? Are we getting to the point where we will no longer be able to buy Adobe software?

Adobe gave me some space for a website years ago to share my photos. I had over 700 photos on it when Adobe changed their minds and took it away... i don't have much trust of Adobe as a result of that stunt.

Some CDs are still available at this time (but may not be for long) from large retail sources like B&W Photo. May a few calls to check out what’s in stock.

I just bought a copy of Elements 18 last week and loaded it on two pc. I have not been able to find a good tutorial book as of yet. In the past I have used the Missing Manual by Barbara Bundage. I have a manual for the 12th edition that seems to be basically the same. I updated my operating system about two years ago and could not get organizer and down loader to work so I gave up and bought a copy from BH. I would still like to have every thing on my pc like we use to but that days is gone. I would like to be able to work off line if I needed to.

You can download legacy software on Adobe’s site.

I don't recall if the the last few versions of elements had CDs, but you really don't need them. These days, the only thing on the CD would be a stub program which downloads the software from the internet. Most of my software is downloaded these days. I just include my download directory in my regular backup scheme and and have the install software available in the event of a catastrophic computer failure.

What you get on the CD is just the installation routines that pull the software off an Adobe server when you install. It also periodically verifies that your installation is with a registered user, and will disable if it sees no reg info.

There, that ought to ramp up the Paranoia

Exactly. I mentioned that in the post above yours as a stub program, which in my years as a software programmer was the term we used for temporarily code filling in for real functionality during the software development phase. In this situation the program may give the impression to some end users that the full software package is on the CD when in reality all it does, as you indicated, is to confirm eligibility and download the executables and supporting files from the net, and install them.

You can buy LR till the end of December and maybe find some leftover copies after that. There's still Photoshop Elements. As for downloaded programs, I keep them in my Downloads folder, and I save important ones on CD/DVD.

How common is that practice? I've installed software without an Internet connection.

Isn't this a lot of information for just an installation routine?

Try Affinity one $50 fee, free upgrades and an excellent program. I suggest that we all stay away from Adobe which by definition is clay and is crumbling. OK, defend Adobe, defend President Groper, humbug.

If you have Adobe programs and 100 others that you do not have disks for then take precautions; get a hot-swap drawer [$20-30 free shipping Ebay] ... put in a HD and backup your computer and pull the HD out and store in a safe place... perhaps with an X wife!! Worrying about one or two Adobe programs.. why... if you lost them along with every thing else on our failed HD... you have more than an Adobe problem!!! Yep!! a big PC or Apple suicidal problem... Yikes!!

Cloud useless modern expense ... remember when the Nukes start flying when Trump wonders what that red button does ... well the net will go down... better you have that HD in a bunker. Remember Porto Rico US citizens still do not have power.. more than a month... could happen here!!!

What's the problem with downloading? Every piece of software that I download, I store on an external hard drive. Just create a folder system, i.e.; folder for Adobe, Affinity, Alien Skin, Macphun, Photo Mechanic, etc., you get the drift. Anytime there is an upgrade to the software that I have to download I just add it to the folder. This procedure will obviously not work with subscriptions that automatically update. But then, it is not necessary for those types of software. I also save all emails that have Key codes or Activation codes, to a folder. When I purchase a new computer, all I have to do is hook up the external hard drive and run the installation for any software program that I have backed up. Lot faster than downloading it off the internet.
