I don't know the differences between Notebooks or Laptops for this purpose. I have never used Macs only Windows.
Don't want to spend a fortune but am traveling some and would like to download my pictures before I get home. I know there are opinions out there.

Lot of sales right now, check out HP.com, price depends on what you want to do and power needed to run your programs, my travel computer right now is a Toshiba, laptop, celeron running W10, 4 Gigs of ram, enough for PSP X8, enough for everything I do , Bob.
Costco has a bunch of them. I have an ASUS 17 inch touch screen - i7, 1GB RAM, SSD OS Drive, 2nd data drive I purchased 3 years ago. I use it for travel and emergencies when needed. It's fast and reliable. I think either ASUS or Dell offer many options. Some like HP. Lots of Black Friday deals around.

If I were to buy a portable computer for photography I would get a Microsoft. A couple of reasons. It has a screen with good resolution and the pen work quite well. Being a tablet and a 3:2 aspect ratio screen I can fit images from a typical DSLR perfectly on the screen .
Be careful about screen size. Too big and using it on an airplane or train becomes awkward!
I am not going to suggest a brand, but features. Number one, get the largest screen size you are willing to travel with. My laptop screen is 17". It is easier to edit on larger screens. Next, look at the displays on laptops in a store. Maybe even bring in an SD card with some of your pics and view them on the screen. You can still buy on line if you want, but see what pictures look like on the laptop. Every display is a little different. Get a large enough hard drive to store pictures while on the road. I suggest 500 GB minimum. Finally, get as much RAM as you can. My laptop has 16 GB.
I have a small Asus netbook for traveling. It's sufficient for holding images and I have Irfanview on it for down and dirty editing. Since I only post vacation pics on Facebook while on vacation, it is perfect. Additionally, it fits in the side webbed slot on my camera bag so it stays with me and my gear as carry on when I fly.
Why not an iPad? I use mine for photo backup and can even do some editing.
Cdayton, I have an IPad. It doesn't have USB ports. Did you find some sort of adapter to fit the smaller ports?

First of all, it's obvious that some of the responders suggesting getting a 17" laptop have never traveled with them except by car. That size machine is considered a desktop alternative and not really designed for portability. Another suggested a iPad which is totally useless for any serious post processing. The two criteria that I look for are weight and storage. I have been spending many months away from home lately traveling to all parts of the world and have been using a three year old Dell Latitude e7240 12" laptop running Windows 10. This is considered a business grade (more durable for travel) machine that has an I7 processor 8GB memory, 1TB of solid state storage, and weighs in at just under 3 pounds. It has all my post processing software and plenty of room to store my images. When I get home I just transfer the image folders to my NAS box and I'm good to go. I also carry a USB powered external drive for an additional level of backup.
Most smaller laptops use SSDs and generally start with 128GB or 256GB. From personal experience I can tell you that you need at least 500GB which will add to the price. I also consider the machine I use a traveling PC and don't really use it when I'm at home. Here's a link to the current model

Why not, do you plan on any heavy post processing while on the road?

I want to do all the post processing I do at home when I'm traveling.
