How did the settings get changed?

I have a Nikon D7100. I was in San Francisco this past weekend. Went down to “Pier 39” to get a good shot of Alcatraz and of the sea lions. Although I didn’t notice, at first, at some point I saw that in the upper left-hand corner of the viewfinder display there was a “B/W” showing, and in the upper right-hand corner, “1.3x”. Somewhere, my camera had been shooting in black-and-white and in 1.3x crop mode. But, I never changed anything. My camera sits in a backpack case, in the trunk of my car, when I’m not using it. When I DO use it, it’s mostly in “A” mode and the only setting I have done anything with was to set it to JPEG Fine. I couldn’t figure out how to take it out of “B/W” mode so I just did a “Reset Settings” and was back in business. Just curious if anyone has experienced something like this or knows how it might have happened?

Maybe you forgot to turn it off when you put it in the bag and a pressure on some buttons changed the settings ?

I’m going with Gremlins. And I ALWAYS turn it off each time. Yeah... Gremlins.
Ansel Adams would have changed it into a 8x10 view camera.

I've had past experiences with those gremlins. As for Ansel Adams, that's just wishful thinking...

I have always wanted my cameras to reset to user defined parameters every time I turned the power on. Unfortunately they haven't been listening to me. Most cameras have a two-button reset that returns the camera to factory settings. I want to define my own default settings.
I should note that in a case where things get changed at random, shooting raw is a good solution. The raw file is independent of almost all the picture settings, which only define the jpg that the camera generates. (Of course, ISO, focus mode, aperture, etc do affect the raw file).

That's a strange one. It takes several steps to shoot in B&W, and for the camera to do that on it's own would be unusual. I hope someone has a good answer for your question.

Nope. I always "pre-flight" and "post-flight" check my settings every time. I have several settings that I always check prior to taking the camera out for a shoot and after I return from a shoot. More importantly, I never leave my camera any place I wouldn't leave me.

I noticed this—but I typically blame myself and change it back. I’m not a believer that settings magically change. Anyone else have access to it?
