Big Bend National Park has many species of birds. Some species are found only in that area. A word of warning, though, in that it can get crowded there, especially during spring break.

Most of the campgrounds( if you're into camping) will fill up early, as well as the only lodging in the park-the Chisos Mountains Lodge.

When did Big Bend move to South Texas?

True. Big Bend National Park(BBNP) was established in 1944. It borders the "bend" of the Rio Grande River, which is SE of El Paso. South Texas is the area south of San Antonio, all the way to the Rio Grande and Brownsville.

goldfinger is right. Rio Grande Valley is probably the best place in ALL of the U.S to take birding pictures.

Agreed! South Texas has many species of birds, even sub-tropical species.

I go to BB a lot, not many motels and the Lodge In the Chisos Basin fills quickly during the tourist season so calling now for a room there might work, if at all possible ask for one of the stone cottages, the one facing the window is the most rented room in Texas. Highest tourist time are thanksgiving, chili cook off (just completed) Xmas, and the various spring breaks . Late March and early April are the best times to plan a trip because you may catch the wild flowers blooming. Motels not in the park but close are, The Study Butte lodge, Longhorn Ranch Motel, there are a couple of others with the most expensive being the motel in Lajitas ( golf resort).

A couple of years ago I was in the very small town of Port Mansfield, TX on the Gulf. It had a huge number and variety of birds. At the west end of town there is a city park with a creek flowing into the gulf and birds were everywhere. Not a pretty beach though. There were also a lot of birds along the country road from the interstate to the town. This was in the winter, March as I recall.

It's out of the way but has the advantage of no crowds or congestion. There is a motel or two, again as best I recall (we were in a lot of places on that trip, all around the gulf). What I do recall clearly is that we saw more birds here than anywhere else around the Texas gulf area.
