iPhone/iPad 11.X Update

The version 11.X update to iPhone/iPad uses the new HEIC image format. I typically simply connect my device and copy the images to my PC so they can be cataloged in LR. However, with this update, the images are simply not available in Windows Explorer.

I've made some cursory searches for a remedy, but have not yet found one. Can anyone shed any light on a method to get my images from the device to my PC?

Thanks in advance.

I just read elsewhere that iOS 11 uses 64-bit architecture, so if the app that controls the transfer is 32-bit, it is disabled. Take your stuff to an Apple Store Genius Bar, if you are near one.

Thanks, Bill. Your link suggests going into Settings on the phone, selecting Camera then change the 'Format' options. Unfortunately, that option is not on the menu on the latest update of iOS. :-/

After some research, this is the best option I've found:

Yes. Not nearly as simply as plugging in the phone and copying, but it worked.

How's the battery life? Seems like there are a lot of complaints about the battery draining exceptionally fast.

There was noticeable degradation in the initial release, but there have been 2 subsequent updates since then and battery life has returned to expected levels with the last update (11.1).

Yes there is. Go into “settings,” “camera,” “formats,” and select either “High Efficiency” or “Most Compatible.” That’s on IOS 11

I updated to version 11.1 just this morning, prior to realizing I couldn’t copy my images from the device. I can assure you there is no option to do as you say in either my iPhone or iPad. I know that most of the remedies I read about gave the same recommendation as you’re giving, so I can only assume that Apple removed those options in version 11.1.

I stand corrected. You’re right. The last update to iOS 11 was 11.0.2, not 11.1. I just noticed that I have the update ready to be installed. So I revise me earlier post to say that I guess I don’t have an answer for you.

No harm, no foul. Technology moves forward. Thanks for your interest, just the same. I found a remedy using Windows Photos to import from the phone, then I can copy to a folder for import into LR.
