Definitely wide angle. You won't be alone there, so a wide angle lens will get close-up subjects. How wide depends on what you have. I would bring my Tokina 16-28mm.

Since you own a Canon 7D Mark 2, and it being a crop sensor. I would recommend one from your own camera Brand. The inexpensive 10-18mm. And it won't break the bank either.

Unless you want to do a lot of people-pictures, stick with wide angle. The Canon 10-18mm lens would be perfect.

Having shot at Times Square a number of times, I would choose a 18mm (FX or DX equivalent) to whatever the longest focal length zoom lens you can get! Wide angle for overall street and overhead buildings, billboards, marquees and neon signage, medium for street people, portraits and signage closeups and telephoto for extreme closeups of signage and neon. Have fun, Times Square never ceases to amaze! Cheers. Ed

Next time I shoot Times Square I’ll bring my widest angle lens and tripod. The idea is to shoot it in small aperture and long SS to get the maximum DOF and blur out all the people. Time will tell if it works... 😃

I think of Times Square as a landscape.

I don't think you can use a tripod in New York City. Better check it out before you pack it.

Blur out all the people??!!

People make it vibrant. Otherwise, it is just a collection of tacky buildings!!

Did those photos have EXIF or other data telling what lenses / settings were used??
