All the bigger I print is 20X30, I fill the frame and compose so I do not usually have to crop. My D7200 gave me beautiful 20X30 prints using post processing sharpening tools. With my d810 I can see an eyelash on a 40X60 print. I never have had use for anything over 20 megs. When I owned my D4s with 16 megs I was getting beautifully sharp 20X30 prints with cropping. IMHO anything over 16 megs with todays post processing and today's firmware and software and other internal sharping technology is overkill. IMHO So, why do we need medium format, my buddy shots for billboards in NYC, he says the companies requirements are 12 mega's. They do the rest in the lab. So again, IMHO, TODAY'S technology in the camera and PP has made large format digital obsolete. But, if you want to spend the bucks, you are free to do so.

Did you notice that your initial statement "...are rendering these larger formats obsolete" was then followed by a justification specific to your 20x30" print size? Trust me, there are many photographers who print larger than 20x30. Do you remember when digital cameras were 2MP and when 8MP cameras came out, there were those who said, "anything more than 2MP is overkill..." Technology always advances demand for higher performing cameras. In 10 years, I predict many pro photographers will find 20MP to be unsuitable.
Remember that MF is more about sensor size than megapixels. cheers.
