I think you are wise and absolutely right on your decision. However I am 78 and have a need for a print size bigger then 20x30 and I rather spend $500 more on a 850 then an 810 as I suspect this will be the last camera of that I will need. Fortunately, like you speak of, I have saved enough money to do so over the years.

The 100 score is a relative score, not a perfect score. There will be cameras that pass 100 at some point...

I understand your point of view, and it applies to others as well, including myself. As an amateur, I think that one should master most functions of their camera before upgrading. Especially going from a crop sensor to a full frame. Full frame photography is far more expensive as a hobby or as a professional. You can buy 2 DX lenses or more, compared to one FX lens. I remember when the D700 and D90 were released, around 2008. The D700 came with almost the same excitement as the D850. And it came with a whopping 12.1 megapixels. Nine years later, we're at 46 megapixels, plus many other new features. And a camera that recently had a first ever perfect score of 100. That is indeed an upgrade. For some or not for some?

I got my D850 a couple of weeks ago, I am still learning it. I haven't used it much yet, just practice and testing stuff. The results I am seeing so far, far exceed anything I have used thus far. I still hold on to my D7200, D500s and D810. The D850 is another kettle of fish. Learning to love it!!!!

The D850 is giving me real GAS, however I'm going to pass at this time. My D800 has far more capability than I as an "advanced" amateur. The only reason for thinking of changing is GAS. My reason for passing at this time is that at my age I expect I will only get one or two more DSLR's. The only DSLR's I've had are the D90 and the D800, both of which I still have. I entered the world of digital in 2008 with the D90, adding it to my Nikon F4 (which I still use). I was so new to digital I didn't even realize that DX meant a crop sensor, I just thought the D90 was a top of the line amateurs 35mm (FF) DSLR camera. The info I read at the time didn't really describe the crop aspect. All I knew was that it was a lot less expensive than the "Pro" Nikons. I was and am still happy with the D90 and the DX format is absolutely no hindrance to me, has no bearing on the desire to upgrade, but GAS forced me to want an actual FF camera. Didn't need it, just wanted one. Plus I have a lot of FX lenses from the F4 era and have now added more (yes, have used them on the D90). Finally bit the bullet in 2014 and jumped in to the D800. Again, far more camera than I need but love it. So this was a gap of 6 years between my first DSLR and latest DSLR. Now, looking at the timeline of Nikon FX releases I see a span of only 2 to 3 years between them, each offering interesting steps forward, especially in sensor size and/or iso. So my thought is, since I've only had my D800 for 3 years now that the D850 is out, what will Nikon be releasing in another 3 years? If I keep my 6 year gap between DSLR purchases then I'm wondering what Nikon will have for us in 2020? Figure if I start saving now, I'll even have enough money to buy whatever they have to offer by then. If I had a real reason to upgrade, I'd get a D850, but..... I can wait. Anybody else thinking of waiting?

Photography is my passion. I don't collect anything, don't drive anything new. So, I am all in when it comes to my passion. I had a D800, now own and like my D810. The only reason I would buy the D850 is for the tilting screen, love my D500 that has it, lets me shoot low which I love to do. But I can wait until they put a discount on it and include the vertical grip, this is what I did with the D810. I will, at that time, sell my mint D810 with vertical grip in the box on ebay. That way my new Nikon D850 will cost me about $1000.00 to $1300. I can do that, to satisfy my passion.

What??? No need to buy the latest and greatest. Secure in knowing a new camera will not make you a better photographer. If you had a great camera last month it is still a great camera. Maybe some photographers are not as proficient as their camera. The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys. Next year there will be another toy.

My D5100 is getting tired. I handled all the latest Nikons yesterday, except the D5 and D800 line. If the shutter on the D850 is as smooth sounding as they say, I just may go for that model, as I like a quiet sounding, no vibration shutter...

I got my D5300 in Jan this year. As I my knowledge on the camera have increased I see no need for an upgrade for many years to come. My photo interest began in 1969 and I have my best camera ever today. As a hobby photographer I am a victim of financial limits.

I honestly think that my D5300 gives me the best value for my money. I don’t think there’s any other camera on the market that would do it better for the money I’ve spent. I don’t think I would see any improvement in my photos if I shot with the D850 than I do with my D5300.

The D850 is a very good camera, but for the same amount of money I’ll get a used car - for crying out loud!

I.e. it’s all about quality vs budget. As I don’t have a large budget I’ll buy the best I can get for the limited cash I have. That does not include a camera for $4-5000...

However, if I had a larger, or unlimited, budget I think I’d go for a Pagani Zonda before I’d go for a full frame camera, no matter the brand.

Meanwhile, I’ll save up for a Fisheye lens - instead of getting addicted to GAS...

In my case, photography is not my main hobby so doesn't get funded any where near the level of my classic cars. I need to keep my focus more oriented to upkeep of my 1957 AC Ace, 1957 AC Aceca Bristol, 1964 MGB Roadster, 1972 BMW 2002 (purchased new and still have) and 1980 BMW 633CSi (also purchased new and still have). Sold my plane in 1979 to purchase the 633CSi, prefer to fly low in that! My Avatar is the 1957 AC Aceca Bristol.

Nikon was forced to introduce the 850 to keep up with Canon's 5DS and 5DSr 52 mega pixel entries. As Peter Hurley, a life long medium format camera user, says the 5DSr is a game changer giving me medium format photos without all the weight, bulk, and expense.

Right now everyone is complaining about low light response, i.e. they want a point and shoot camera that is idiot proof. Doing so will ruin what photography business there is out there when Uncle Bob does not have to worry about being able to light a wedding after all is said and done.

Actually, pretty sound thinking IMHO. I jumped from a D700 to a D800 and was simply amazed at the detail. Then, I bought a Df and have used it primarily since buying it. Not as many MPs but the images are beautiful and the "experience" using it is wonderful. 46MPs sure is tempting, but, like you, I'll sit on the sideline for a while longer.

That Df has piqued my interest.

'He who has the most toys when he dies, wins' But, but, but....Nikon, Canon, Sony and other camera companies need to stay in business ☺☺....GAS is what keeps the profits flowing. Seems they're always introducing a new and better widget as technology continues to advance. Guilty myself of GAS and not necessarily in photography, you should see my fishing equipment, Lordy, Lordy. I now live by the old adage, fishing lures aren't designed to catch fish but fisherman. I'd love a new car with new features but the current one is still going strong and I like it......I guess ask yourself Do I 'need' the upgrade or do I 'want' the upgrade....either way, Enjoy your passion.

The D90 was and still is a very good camera. I have no experience with the D800 but a good friend of mine has one and he has been very happy with it. By the way, he conducts frequent workshops and sells his photographs. He told me that the D800 brings him about $5,000 a year in print sales.
I agree with you, no need for a D850. There is a big difference between I want and I need.
We are at a stage in digital photography that practically every one to two years a new camera hits the market. I also agree with you the cameras have advanced technology but we do not need so many bells and whistles to photograph our subjects. You have seen that with your two cameras you can practically do everything.
Do not be concerned about what Nikon or any other manufacturer will debut in three years from now. Nobody can predict the future and we do not even know if we will be here to see it.
