Does anyone here do street scenes? I love Vivian Maier's work. I don't have the guts.

Get a 600mm lens.

Maybe a right-angle viewfinder.

Use a 300 mm zoom and stand across the street. Nobody will notice. If I can do it in Hollywood, CA you can do it in Mississippi.

Forty years ago I did a lot of street photography around Manhattan. Long lenses can give you distance from your subject. A wide lens will show that you have a connection with your subject and show more of the surroundings. 28 or 35 mm were the go to lenses.

I agree. I have done a little street photography, and I used a wide lens, composed with my subjects off center, and it looks to them like I am shooting something past them.

I have done a lot of street scenes. It's a public place and you can take anything you have the guts to take. I use a telephoto lense because a lot is happening within a variety of distances whether it's buildings or people. Generally when people notice me they wave back. I admit there are times I feal like I am intruding but you get over it after doing it so many times. Good luck and get some good shots.

Summon the courage. Keep trying. Smile. Don't stand out, but don't sneak around either. Take lots of pictures. Summon the courage. You can do it.

Guts before talent. I have the same problem. It's easier in NYC, though.
