Printing Image Problem

I hope this comes through--I tried earlier and lost the whole thing. I do not usually print my images so I am a bit of a novice here. Anyway, yesterday I found a couple of old images on my computer that I shot of friends a number of years ago. I decided to print them and send them the prints as they represent a really good time we had. I took the pictures underwater with a point and shoot underwater film camera. One picture was in about 12 feet of water of a free diver and the other was in about 50 feet of water of a scuba diver sitting in a sunken fighter plane. I had scanned the pictures from the prints to my iMac.

Yesterday I moved the images into Lightroom and tweaked them as much as I could and then tried to print 5x7 prints. My printer (HP Officejet Pro 6968) did not let me print no matter what settings I used so I then transferred the images from Lightroom to iPhoto where I tweaked the pictures again and printed them. The shallower picture came out pretty well but the deeper pictures came out too dark to use. I then lightened the exposure as much as I could until I was just at the point of blowing out the light areas and I tried again. But I got the same results--the print is still too dark to use. (The image here is on the computer and is as light as I dare make it.)

Any thoughts or am I just stuck with the limitations of my format? Thanks.

I'm afraid you've reached the limits of the P&S without a flash on the second shot. As you now know, the water acts as a filter admitting mostly blue light as you go deeper, hence the reason many scuba divers use a flash at depth. As for processing the 2nd shot, hopefully someone on the forum with more experience can assist further.

Thanks - I was afraid that would be the answer as I am aware of light at depth but I though it was worth a try. We'll see if anyone else had an idea.

In Lightroom Develop module below your image, you'll see the Soft Proofing check box. You do this to images that you are going to print to see any exposure errors before you waste paper.

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/help/develop-module-options.html is the Adobe tutorial. Look in the YouTubes for more.

I downloaded your photo and opened it in PS . I then clicked on Image - Auto Color . Then clicked on Filter - Camera Raw Filter , then clicked on Auto and than moved the Clarity slider a little to the right . If you have PS , you can try this and see if you like it better . I don't have or use light room , so I can't help you there . Tommy

First, did the person sitting in the cockpit check for eels before getting in? They but very hard! I don't know why your printer will not print this photo, I downloaded it and it printed fine, including PE15 and LR! Maybe a setting is off or low ink? My printer is the HP 8620.

Used Photoshop CC, opened the file, clicked Menu>Image>Adjustments>Match Color, checked the Neutralize checkbox to remove the cast. I added back a little bit of the blue by using the fade command. Took all of 10 secs.

Thanks - I have PS but don't use it much. Your instructions give me another way to try improving the image.

Thanks--I'm still not sure what I'm doing wrong with printing from Lightroom. I'm thinking maybe I haven't set up the printer with Lightroom properly since I can print from iPhoto just fine. Since I don't print a lot this may give me the opportunity to learn a little more about Lightroom and printing as I generally need a reason to learn something new.

Many printers (in Windows, click "properties" in the print dialog) let you make adjustments of various kinds in brightness, color balance etc. I would take a look at that.

Thanks--I have a Mac but I bet there are some adjustments I can make through that. I've also thought of trying to print it as a PDF file rather than a picture file. At least now I have a lot of things to look at.

I'm sure a Mac can do it. It's a printer function, not a computer function. Google it ! >Alan
