I've heard this story many times. The U. S and Russia came close to having a nuclear war in 1983, but one Russian officer decided it was a false alarm. He credits his decision with the fact that he did not blindly follow orders.

It could happen again, maybe with not such a good outcome.

As I understand it, he was disciplined for disobeying orders, left the military, squeaked by on a pension, and died alone, impoverished.

Blindly adhering to the "tick box " culture is now causing so much grief for people .

A recent tax case in the UK revolved around a woman who ran a company and the required regular filing of landfill tax . Because she was going on holiday she filed the return very early and paid the tax due early . She got a £7,000 penalty for her efforts . The law requires that the payment and return are filed on the same day . There is a defence of having a reasonable excuse . HMRC (our IRS) won not accept the excuse . So she ends up in court , the judge says that the penalty is due but abated it down to £100 because of the reasonable excuse. This process may have taken 3 years because of the long waiting list for hearings ,

So this poor woman is not only penalised for caring about her civic responsibilities but also abused by the need to go to court and sugar the waste of time and energy, never mind the stress.

Tick box merchants with pensions schemes .

Of course , this ladies taxes have paid for these people to abuse her .

Blindly adhering to the "tick box " cult... (show quote)

Sounds like HMRC gets it's "customer service" advice from Comcast. 😛

Yes. They would have preferred total annihilation.

Not a lot of common sense in Soviet Communism.

Unlike all the other nations of the world. The human race continues to survive through sheer luck.

It worse than that. Their is a Taxpayers Charter , designed to protect our little taxpaying rights . The HMRC staff know it exists but do not know whats in it . Also HMRC include a "what we expect from you" in their leaflet but fail to tell their staff that the taxpayers rights stand whatever they have done . The staff are led to believe that this is a contractual relationship . More abuse.

Au contraire! The politicians have made their own Utopia. Good healthcare, servants, special treatment, lots of "extra" income. The list goes on.

I'd also heard about this but I think there's another example of WWIII avoided. During the Cuban missile crisis blockade, there were Soviet subs with nuclear-tipped torpedoes. At one point, Moscow-issued orders dictated that the sub fire a torpedo at a U.S. destroyer but the sub captain went defied the orders and held off on the trigger. Could have been the same result as this guy following orders to the letter.
