Powerful feelings can linger long after the relationship is over. You might find Dr. Helen Fisher's book "Why We Love" to be an informative read.

Falling-in-love is safer if done frequently. The Pulchritude Quotient (PQ) at the agency where I was employed sky-rocketed in the last dozen years before my retirement. As a result of this spiking PQ, many of the more mature men in the workforce tended to briefly fall-in-love eight or ten times a day.

I expect that most men of a certain vintage greet with relief the realization that 'falling-in-love' doesn't actually require any follow-up more active than, say, a quick polishing of one's no-line bi-focals.
