Battery warning Sony UWPD wireless system

Not sure exactly where to post this but thought the Video section would be most appropriate.

About a year ago I purchased a Sony UWPD wireless mic system to record video of public speakers. I really like the system, very easy to operate, great quality sound and has a mic-out (which my Canon 70D lacks) for monitoring.

The two units; send and receive sat in my bag for a year since I had no need for them during this time. Both had been fitted with brand new Duracell AA batteries prior to the previous use. When I pulled them out of the bag to prep for a shoot last week, both units had batteries that had heavily corroded leaving thick white residue inside the battery compartment. I haven't seen this behavior with batteries of this age (about 1 year old) ever. I thought I had ruined the units. I soaked the battery holding tray (these are removable fortunately) in CLR and fortunately, the units fired up with new batteries and are working fine.

Moral of the story; remove the AA batteries after every use. I dodged a bullet on this one.

Your real moral of the story is do not use Duracell batteries. They leak every time and destroy thousands of electronic devises constantly. And not not only has Duracell not done a thing about it over the years but they do not honor the warranty they lie about when they sell their batteries. Get ever ready batteries. They are much better, last about as long and if they do destroy a devise, the company replaces the unit without harassment or a hassle. I am surprised there hasn't been a class action law suit brought before Duracell yet.

Your real moral of the story is do not use Duracel... (show quote)

Wow, thanks for your note! It's been a long time since I've had a failure but will sure make the switch.

Glad I could help and sorry I wasn't able to tell you about it before it ever happened. I learned the hard way with 8AA Duracell's that ruined an $85 diving flash light (it's good under water to about 200 feet). The Duracell batteries they gave with the flash light blew up inside the light and completely ruined the flash light. I had to argue with Duracell many times over the phone and when they finally looked up the code on the batteries, they found out I was telling them the truth about the batteries that came with the flash light were the ones that blew up. Only then (and keep in mind I fought with these people for days on end) did they decide to pay me a small percentage of what it would cost to replace the light. Never again will any Duracell battery ever come close to my shopping cart for purchase.
