I am currently using a nikon p850. I want a more powerful telephoto.

Both the Canon EOS Rebel T6. And the Nikon D3400 come with a normal lens 18-55 mm and a telephoto zoom 70 - 300 mm.

Main purpose is birding.
Would either be worth making the $600 investment? ?

Or, should I hope I can eventually get a p900?

The best bet for birding would be to get a DSLR, then you can change lenses later when you can afford a better/longer telephoto. Your initial investment will not be the end . . . you will be happy with the kit lenses initially, but then will want to move on to longer and more capable lenses . . .

By upgrading the glass for a P850 you are literally putting lipstick on a Pig. Transition to a DSLR, like a Nikon D7100 0r 7500.

Nikon's price for a Coolpix P900 is $699.95

Adjust your budget & get that camera.

The P900 is a very good camera. It has a great lens, the longest of any of the bridge cameras, and a great one for bringing in the birds a long way off. As long as you're aware of the limitations of the small sensor, there's no reason not to like the P900. Oh yes, and it doesn't shoot RAW, if that's an issue for you. You'll spend a whole lot more money on a DSLR and you won't find a lens that will reach as far that you can afford. Unless you're very wealthy.

If money matters, get the P900. Try to get a refurb from Nikon. It should be as good as new at a lower price.
If you go with the T6 or D3400 you will need a much longer lens with it. 150-600 lens from Sigma or Tamron or something alike. And that will cost you anohter $1000-1500 on top of the camera kit price.

The P900 will do good job for the money if you are looking to shoot birds that are not in much action. If they are sitting on a branch or swimming on a lake or something alike you can expect lot of good photos from the P900

There have been rumors about a replacement for the P900 that will have a longer lens and a larger sensor. Could be a while to wait though.

If the main purpose is birding, it doesn't matter what body / brand you go with until you get a longer lens at least 400mm ... The Tamron, Sigma, Nikon and Canon models are all beyond your proposed budget, just for the lens, even if purchased used.

John42 - Please edit the title of your post to specify "new Nikon camera". Thanks.

Ralph - if you're going to spend a moment complaining, then spend a moment ready too ... It would be more accurate to be a new camera for birding. If you're going to spend time policing for quality, then we expect the same from you.

Three of the cameras the OP's post mentioned were Nikon. Dollars to donuts, that is what he will buy. My post was polite and was not a complaint. My reason: 1) I and many others are tired of being drawn into threads that do not pertain to us. And 2) The UHH Search Tool is based, per Admin, on the title of threads - if titles are more specific the Search Tool becomes more useful and we all win.

I understand what you're trying to do. If you're going to waste your time in this way ... fine. But, don't waste it by using a generic comment that in content and fact is not applicable to the post ... You surely know a Rebel is not Nikon body ... or maybe you don't? If not, well turn in your badge, you're fired from the UHH Police Posse.

So again, how much did you really read or do you really just have a generic cut n paste? And is that a worthwhile exercise?

Continuing with the worthlessness of this action: as a UHH Police Deputy, you must too understand there's about a 30-minute window where a user can return to a post and make an edit? So when you come to a post made 2 hours ago and suggest a change to the title, what have you accomplished? That is not an actionable request.

And when you come to a discussion with your off-topic comment that already has started without any of the participants failing to understand the content, aren't you violating some more fundamental guidelines of the discussion & knowledge sharing purposes of the site? It doesn't matter your language, you're being rude simply by making an off-topic comment and that adds ZERO value where no one can even act on it.

So, first things first: does a non actionable request, made completely off topic, improve or detract from the quality of the site? If you're going to waste your time policing, send a private message. You can probably use generic cut n paste text and annoy one person rather than everyone. Think about it.

And when the discussion goes off topic, we all lose.

Apologies to the OP who asked a valid question and to everyone else too, minus Ralph, for my need to do this exact off-topic action being complained about. But, it's time this user's worthless action gets a public call-out along with an actionable corrective action they can perform that serves to effectively improve the site for us all.
