I may own Apple but I tend to agree with you. To me, texting is like going back to the 19th century. TYPING WITH YOUR THUMBS? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? Let's go back to the telegraph. WATCHING MOVIES ON A 5 INCH SCREEN WHEN I HAVE A 48" SCREEN AT HOME??? REALLY??? I have a magnifying glass for you. Oh and what sound quality. LMAO.

You no longer have to type a "text" message. With the Messages app, you can dictate and let the phone transform speech to text. Or, you can record an audio message and send that. Or, you can send a video or photo. Or, you can draw on the screen with your finger and send a sketch. Or, in the iPhone X, you can animate an emoji with your own facial expressions AND voice, and send that... It's a lot more than just "text" these days.

Movies look just as good on my iPhone 7 Plus as they do on my 55" Samsung Smart TV, when I hold the iPhone at the same relative distance (so the screen is the same relative size as it is from where I normally sit in my living room). The resolution is the same 1920x1080 (at 401 PPI), and the color gamut is actually better. The sound quality is actually a lot better, since I normally listen with a good set of headphones.

But the iPhone and Macs are probably the two things I have that are truly satisfying to use, and I use them a LOT.

Samsung already beat Apple to the punch with the 8 Note with 2 cameras and lots of power. I don't think they have emoji things, but I wouldn't doubt it if they copy Apple.

The amount of change they have revealed in just one year is mind boggling. I won't talk about it here... Their web site has all the details.

The new iPhone cameras are scary good. You have to see the demo to understand why.

And turning your face into an animated emoji (animoji) that talks in your own voice with YOUR expressions? Priceless... You can even turn your face into an animated pile of poo! (as Craig Federighi demonstrated live)

I'm as stunned today as I was in January, 2007, watching Steve Jobs reveal the first iPhone.

The Apple naysayers will now come out from under the bridge. But do yourselves a favor, naysayers, and go to the web site and watch the demos and films.

Old school. Love it.

I had an LG flip phone back in 2007, about the time the iPhone was introduced. I was fascinated by the iPhone, but didn't think I needed it, until my boss told me to go out and buy one, and the company would pay for the monthly plan. Our training department was able to do things with iPhones we simply never could do with flip phones. They became so important to us that our director bought us all iPhone 4s phones in 2011. We were on the road constantly, while working on upcoming presentations and making more travel plans and site arrangements. We did much of it on our phones.

Is it just me, or as phones get "smarter" do people get dumber? A better tool to fool folks has never been invented. Just sayin.. and as cameras, well, they are what they aint.

Yes, it's quite remarkable to have a computer in your pocket. I'm a Windows 10 user, but my choice for a smart phone is Apple. Even though it costs more than much of the competition, I think it offers more as far as reliability goes, and support. The color in the photos is more realistic. I will probably order an iPhone X and sell my iPhone 7+ which despite the glossy black, I have managed to keep pristine.

just what I always wanted....an emoji face. what are we 5 year olds?? every time I dictate into the phone it screws up what I'm trying to say and then I have to go back and delete half the message. isn't it easier to just TALK on the phone?? sketch? you must have a lot of time on your hands. texting is more time consuming. not to mention dangerous since many people do it driving AND walking. I wish they'd get Siri to work more like Google. Try to get info on Rutgers. It gives you info on Ruckers who ever they might be. then do it on Google and you actually get info on Rutgers.

iPhone is mostly a marketing coup. Sure it has good tech in it, however... I've had touch screens since '06, email, web access,3rd party apps, music, navigation and a pretty decent camera since around the same time. I've had wireless charging since '12, my current phone is two yrs old and has a screen resolution greater than the new iPhone X, it also has facial recognition for unlocking.
So there !

The addictive nature of the smartphone certainly can be a problem. My nephew got married a couple of weeks ago. The minister announced that it was an "unplugged" wedding, so that the ceremony could be enjoyed by all, and the professional photographers could capture the event discretely. That was nice. But the reception was a sea of smartphones! Dancers were tripping over each other as they videoed each other videoing each other...

As far as cameras go, it's a much better point-and-shoot camera than most people had back in the film days. It's certainly better than the Canon ELPH Jr. APS film camera I had back in 2000. That was a pocket camera. And OVER 90% of all photos made today are made with smart phones! By sheer volume of use, the iPhone is the single most popular camera on the market today.

Smart phone cameras probably will not duplicate what advanced adjustable cameras with interchangeable lenses can do. But they will replace/already have replaced them for many folks who aren't serious photographers. After all, the best camera you have is the one you have with you right now. And for many, that's a smart phone, because we don't carry our "heavy iron" everywhere.

My 4s makes/receives calls, does text on occasion (I'm just not a big text user), and runs an exposure program that is tops. That's all I need. In fact, the exposure program is the original reason I switched to an iPhone. I have an analog watch that does all I need. Finally, I don't watch TV. For the cost of a new iPhone, I could purchase photographic equipment I'd rather have. I guess I'm just not one of those gimmicky techies. Though, I'm immersed in technology everyday and enjoy it.

It's not something anyone truly NEEDS. But it is a tempting toy for gamers and a really useful tool for business people. Apple will probably be a trillion dollar company soon, largely due to the items they introduced today.

And the crazy prices of these smartphones might be good news for camera manufacturers by reviving sales of small decent point and shoot models. Took this shot last week with a 7 year old Canon sx130 point and shoot. A dinosaur by today's standards, but how many smartphones will top the color and detail I got?

And another one for good measure

Ha, points well taken. The other day I was at an airshow and a guy had a cellphone mounted on a big stabilization/handle type rig. I had to chuckle at the big smile on his face (vs knowing the quality of pics he would get). But that was his tool of choice, and he enjoyed it, and the photos as well, I suspect. So in that regard, the essence of photography existed.
But, sometimes all of the hype over phones baffles me, especially in a world so full of so many other technological devices. So many are so buried in them that the world around them is often only a reflection of what they want to see in the small screen. And I fear the indoctrination of the younger generations to what they see and think is the extent of facts as "provided" to them. I often think adolf would have loved cell phones,,,he would not have had to drop leaflets from airplanes. Its become quite alarming in recent years, often reflected in the anger and "simplicity" of on-line posts. Appreciate your balanced and intelligent posts.

I am very excited about the iPhone X - I waited to trade in 6 Plus and happy I did. I am always up for a newer better camera in my phone. Happy with all my Apple products.

Well said! I have a lot of Apple stuff and am very satisfied with there products. One reason is they work.

Having used pc’s since the days of ms dos, and having gone through all the Windows permutations, I switched over to Apple products about four years ago. For myself, I never looked back or regretted it. As a full time pastor I use an iMac, a MacBook Pro, my iPad and my iPhone 7 Plus on a daily basis. They all are extremely useful to me for my ministry.

The camera on my iPhone 7 Plus will never replace my Nikon D750, not only for the pictures it produces, but also for the great pleasure I get from shooting with it. However, the convenience of having a decent camera in my pocket at all times has come in handy on many occasions.
