In the professional world it is highly advisable to have a back-up body of the same or similar quality as your main body. Both in case of camera troubles or accidents on a shoot, as well as for the benefit of having two different lenses mounted at the same time so you never miss a shot due to changing lenses. It is often a good idea to have a comparable crop sensor body to accompany your full frame bodies for those times when a full frame just will not give you the "reach" you need to shoot a distant subject. There are other, lesser reasons to have a second or even a third body on a shoot, but a Pro would NEVER be foolish enough to go out on a paid shoot with only one camera body, or just a single lens either.

From time to time I shoot an event at the correctional facility where I work and for co-workers, on one event I used all three of my Pentax bodies. 1st body had a 12-24 f4, 2nd body a Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 and the last last body was set up with either
a Sigma 35mm f1.4, or a Pentax 77mm F1.8. This is why I never sold a camera body as I bought my second and third body.

This might be a silly question but from a newbie...I would like to understand a little better. I just got my first dslr - a Nikon D5300 and just learning everything about it. Plus I am starting to aquire better glass instead of just the kit lens that came with it - but as far as purchasing another camera body....why do you do that? I see a lot of people here have various camera bodies...so just curious as to why.

Cindy

I am an amateur; at the moment I have a total of three working camera bodies - a Pentax SLR I purchased in 1984, a Canon SLR I purchased in 1995, and a Pentax DSLR I purchased in 2015. My usual practice is to keep my previous primary body when I purchase its replacement, because I have been through periods of waiting for a camera body to be repaired, and I didn't like it; by the time I purchase the next body, selling the one which has been serving as backup isn't worth the bother. I had two Canon Digital Rebels in a row die on me, which is why there is an apparent twenty year gap between purchases - I actually purchased two DSLRs during that time, and it emphasized to me that unexpected things can happen.

ALWAYS have 2 full frame bodies with a 24-70 and 70-200 mounted and swung from a Double strap on my body for the weddings for the entire day.
I shoot the 70-200 at the start of the aisle walk and the 24-70 when they get closer. The only part of the wedding day that a camera fail requires a split second fix.....drop it and grab the other one :-)
I just keep them on me all day to photo what I see.
During slower parts of the day, will swap lenses etc ...but always have 2 bodies on me (and a crop Camera in the bag for backup )

You know what they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words". But in your case, "a picture is worth north of $13,000.00".

Sorry to say the photo belongs in the gallery section... here if you had a discussion of virtues in the topic, perhaps in general section. In gallery would have been commented on based on background, and truncated left side of camera. Three Nikon cameras a good photographer does not make... Alas!!

Too often even photos of Nikon cameras and lenses or discussions of Nikon is a religious subject... similar to putting Jesus Christ photo on a coffee cup... I note that MT finally commented on the reasons for his compulsion to have many bodies!! Having three Nikons is too much like polygamy.

I have know people with Nikon cameras that when the camera died... well, they had them buried with full honers in the original box! Nikon owners with long lenses pressing the shutter button 7 times. Indeed I thought the Bag Pipes were a bit much. MT Shooter, when you die will the cameras be in your hands at the showing??

Long live Sony
