I have recently picked up a Nikon D3100 with a 18-55mm lens
I have bought a remote with a cord
And I have an old video camera tripod !

Welcome to UHH, Jeeper.
The best advice is to remove the lens cap, that's the big sort of round thing that clips on. Turn the camera on. Point the lens in the general direction of what you wish to photograph. Look through the little window on the other side of the camera from the lens, and push the button. You'll hear some mechanical noises from inside the camera. That's it. You've taken a photograph.
Just kidding, but we also have a good deal of fun here, too. Again, welcome.
