Give NAS Some Thought

One of the nice things about UHH is all the wonderful ideas people give me for spending my money. One of the better ideas I picked up here is Network Attached Storage (NAS). I have a Synology DS241se. It's a box connected to my network, and it holds two 3TB WD Red drives. In addition to backing up to two external drives, I also backup to the NAS. Each drive has the exact same data, so if one fails, I'm not lost. The big advantage I see is that I can access those files from any other computer I'm using. I can even copy the files from the NAS to another computer. I've never tried connecting from a different location, but I think that's possible. It sits off by itself in a corner of the room, so it's not likely to get knocked over.

I have recently done exactly the same thing as you Jerry only mine is set up remotely from the house . We tried with a transmitter first but it failed so we just wired it with a 20 meter cable and it works automatically to backup our system image once a week . And it keeps my wife very happy backing up my Plumbing business files without me having to do anything ( I was always forgetting)Being outside of the main house covers us if there was ever a fire. It took 16 hours to do the first back up because someone has quite a lot of photo files on the system but after that it does just incremental backing that is overnight but with only a short time involved. Great system for peace of mind.
