I am currently using a 5D MKII which has served my purpose admirably, however it's getting a little long in the tooth. I have read opinions and reviews until I'm blue in the face, so my question to 6D MKII users should I satisfy my gas attack and make the jump? B & H has a kit with a 24-105L for $3099 and I would like you folks opinion.
Wouldn't that be an update but a downgrade?

So, I think you are saying I would be downgrading by replacing my 5D MKII with a 6D MKII?
Hi Jakebrake--
Glad you posted this because I've been considering the same purchase, and posted a query about it back in the winter. However, I would be moving from a 50D, which I've used for 8+ years with the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and the 16-35 f/4L IS. But, also thinking it would be "better" (for me at least) to go after a used 5DMkIII instead. I've received some good pointers from more experienced Hoggers on both. Just not thrilled to also read recent reviews on DPReview on the 6DMkII. I don't make a living as a photographer, don't plan to have several cameras, and tend to keep items for a long time!
So, I'll be following this thread, too.

For ~$2000, you can buy a used 5D mKIII and a 24-105L. Or for $3 000, you could buy a 5D mk IV and use the lenses you currently have for awhile. Just a couple of other alternatives...
The 6D and 5D series are aimed at different markets, and the price reflects it. The 6D is Canon's entry FF body and aimed at advanced amateurs, while the 5D is aimed more at the professional market (not to say that both couldn't be used for either application). The 6D II is a big improvement, especially in AF capability over the MKI, while the 5D4, as is typical of past generations of each series, has a slightly faster frame rate, higher resolution, improved AF and a more rugged/weather sealed construction - it's aimed at working pros that don't need the performance of the 1DX (sports).

I think so. The 6D is a grade below the 5D.

I agree. The 6d II would probably feel like a downgrade, and it's not gotten very good reviews. 5D Mark IV is a better fit in your case.
Personally, I would stick with the mk III. If I must retire my mk III some sad day, then I will most likely go with the current latest and greatest 5D. Notice that I have not ditched my mk III for a mk IV.

Thank you Susan. From reading many of the replies that are all advocating the 5D MKIII, I just may have to rethink my gas attack.

👍👍 Yep, while I'd like to have a MK IV if $ were no object, I love my 5D3 and will probably die with it. It's a better camera than I am a photographer and does everything I need - fast, capable AF, good in low light and solid as a rock.
Depends on what you want to do with it. Then again, you're asking someone still using the original 5D. Will replace it when reaches a point where repair costs exceed the value of the camera when and if it does break. Until then, it remains as my favorite wedding and portrait camera. 6D would probably exceed the 5D for what I use it for, but I think the 5D III or IV will provide better versatility.

I'm interested TriX. Where can I find a used 5D MKIII and a 24-105L lens for 2 grand?

Thank you. I'm rethinking my options.

Thanks. I wish I could afford the 5D MKIV, so will have to shop for a MKIII. Hopefully TriX will steer me in the right direction.

Thank you Sir. I'm now pretty much convinced a 5D MKIII would be a better option. Isn't this forum great!!!
