Junk Mail? - Maybe Not

I got two pieces of mail from Verizonwireless yesterday. I haven't had a contract with them in a couple of years, so I figured they were trying to get me back. For some reason, I opened the envelopes. Each contained a check for a tax refund. NY billed them for too much tax, which was refunded, and they passed the refund on to customers. I almost threw $30 in the garbage.

That's what they were hoping for.

Gee I only got $10.60. Did you notice the checks would void in 90 days if not presented for deposit?

It is very common for companies offering refunds and especially rebates to make
their mail look as much like junk mail as possible. I recall that a few state AGs were
looking into this.

This reminds me. Some time ago I threw an envelope into the trash because I thought it was another bit of junk mail. Then my wife opened it and found stock certificates that were quite valuable.

I threw a $5000 insurance check away last year. Luckily the insurance company called within a day I was to receive it to ask if I got it. I didn't realize that the health insurance I had carried a rider for unusual expenses incurred by me. I was able to recover the check from the trash because I thought it was just junk mail from the insurance company. Needless to say I am much more careful about anything I toss now.

Yikes, wouldn't have survived at my house. Every piece of junk-looking mail with a name on it goes into the shredder.

Haven't received anything from VZW yet & I've been with them for over 10 years. Maybe Jerry got MY check?
