Deer Melon..
The dog barked, didn't pay much attention until daylight, when it was discovered a critter drug the watermelon outta the garden and ate it. Heard Raccoons and Coyotes like'em also, but we saw some Deer tracks nearby.
When I used to grow watermelons I would watch them and usually the deer would get them just before I was read to harvest. Deer seem to have a unique ability to tell when watermelons are ripe and usually don't smash them and eat them before that time. The key is pick them two days early and beat the deer to them. Ever notice that only certain watermelon are smashed and eaten and not all. It's the ripe ones they are after. No second class dining here.
Yes deer like watermelon and this guy also loved green grapes of all things!!
Sorry to hear your melon-choly report.
My dog is good at picking out ripe watermelon. I call him my melon collie.

I received my chuckle for the day! Thanks everyone!
I know it isn't funny when they are your melons, but it is sort of funny that they go after only the ripe ones.

If you think deer like watermelon, try putting a scooped out melon to a few chickens. All that is left is the thin green skin.
I live only 5 miles from Newark International , and yet because I'm next to a 2,000 acre golf course and about 500 acres or so of woods right off an abandoned railroad line , we have deer , groundhogs , wild turkeys , coyotes , foxes , raccoons , possums , swans , hawks , snapping turtles , you name it ...And yes the deer do eat watermelon ! With all this wildlife around I suppose I should invest in a good telephoto and try my hand at nature photography 😃
I grew up in a small mid-western farm town where my Grandfather sold trees and also planted our yard with several types of apple trees, also plumb, cherry and grape vines. We used to harvest as many apples as possible and sell them. My Grandmother used old brown bags and a bathroom scale to weigh them. Of course the birds got many of the best from the top branches, neighborhood kids got many more. In my case the apples I stole from the neighbors tasted better then ours, especially when we camped out in the backyard after 9 pm! But that was a different time!

I dated a girl like that many years ago. She was very melon collie. She had a head like a mellon and a face like a collie.
