Hi, I'm Nancy. I'm 65 yo and retired for 3 yrs. I've done photography for decades off and on as time and inclination allowed, but mostly off in my later years, though I have had a few bouts of intensity when I had subjects to inspire me.

Because of my bad back and a light case of fibromyalgia, I gave up heavy equipment years ago, though I have not yet parted with my old Minolta 101. Anyway, I tried a Canon Rebel XT for awhile but couldn't get into it, so I sold it. Recently I purchased a Sony DSC HX400V, and I find I like it, but need to learn better how to use a digital camera. I'm still programmed for manual setting, and it's been so long since I did much more than point and shoot that I have trouble controlling the exposure requirements.

So any help in translating old manual film control to the digital arena is welcome.

I'm going to try to attach a pic I took this past spring at a park beside the Shenandoah River. We'll see how that goes. :)

WOW Nupshaw, you shaw'nuff had no problem shooting this perfectly delightful image - I'm a brand new hogger too, an 84 year old film duffer and feel like a kindergartner with digital menus - lots to learn on this site - - -

Here's another Sony shot I took at a friend's house in WV. They participate in the Cornell spring bird count each year.

I used a tripod and remote shutter control via my iPhone. It is taken through window glass, as well.

Thanks, George! The Sony has a Zeiss 50x lens, so for short to medium distances I can get pretty good shots -if- I have it set right. Not a long distance camera though.

Welcome to the forum. You sure caught a good one with your furry critter. I too have moved from film to digital but I did it back around 2000. The manual setting you used in film still apply to digital. But unless you are shooting in RAW format you need to get the exposure as close as you can. And of course you will need to have a computer and software to edit the photos. Same as you may have done in the darkroom during your film days. There is much knowledge here on the hog. Enjoy and post more of your work. BTW your critter is very good.

Thanks, Bob! We were walking along the path, came around the tree, and Bingo! There it was. It was so intent on eating it didn't care that I was there. :)

Unfortunately this camera falls on the consumer side of the line, so no RAW format. But I prefer to limit any editing as much as possible, anyway. Guess I'm a bit of a purist that way. I'll adjust contrast and color bias, but that's about it. I do like to play with special effects sometimes and the Sony has some cool ones built in.
