The mission, located about 9 miles south of Tucson was founded in 1692. It is the oldest intact European structure in Arizona and the current church dates from the late 1700's, when Southern Arizona was part of New Spain. An earthquake in 1887 knocked down the mortuary wall and damaged parts of the church. Extensive repairs began in 1905. The next round of restoration began about 1939, when a lightning strike hit the West Tower lantern. When I began to visit the mission, some 35 years ago, restoration was still ongoing. Currently, it appears that restoration on the outside is complete. The inside continues to be restored. In 1960 it was declared a National Historic Landmark and it is still actively run by the Franciscans.

I have visited this church on many occasions. It is definitely worth visiting, for photographers and others alike.

Nice shots, we go there often when staying over for a va appointment, so beautiful and peaceful not to mention the Indian flatbread tacos they sell onsite.

Bruce, excellent series of photos. We live in Vail and one of our favorite places to visit. We were recently there and repairs were being done on the altar area. Fry bread was good.We also like to go for the Pow Wows held there.
