The EF-S 60mm is an excellent lens - I have one- but I would go with the longer focal length lenses recommend. With the 60 you have to get so close to bugs etc. it is less than ideal.

It is also worth considering Canon's close up lenses ( 250D , 500D ) with your existing lenses. Not cheap, but high quality.

Good luck.

One of UHH members' favorite stores, KEH in Georgia, is offering two very gently used EF 105mm f/2.8 macro lenses: one for $182 (in EX+ condition with caps) and the other (in EX condition with a case, caps and hood) for $192. Either deal would be very reliable. /Ralph

If you do not want to go with Canon Tamron and Tokina have excellent macro lenses. I am sure Sigma also has a good one.

I'm open to all three, in fact I have all three. My only macro is a Canon 50mm so I'm looking for specific recommendations base on user experience.

I had the 60mm EFS. Excellent, sharp lens, but too short for an all-purpose macro such as working with live / moving things. The only drawback on the non L 100mm is you need to purchase the hood and lens collar separately. If you can find an EX or EX+ at KEH where these are included, you'll likely find the purchase is still less than buying all new.

Sorry but my camera is a Canon 80D so Nikon is really not in the picture at this time.

I will add the Tamron 180 f/3.5. I use one with a 6D and 7DII. Excellent Image Quality and about 1/2 price of other 150 to 200 macros. Does not have image stabilization but I haven't really missed it. It allows more stand off room for live subjects like butterflies you can't get really close to. On the 7DII with a 1.4x extender it has 403 mm angle of view. I use it for hummers in the yard. Hummers are so fast they aren't much scared of humans. I sit in a lawn chair near the feeder with the camera in my lap. After a few minutes they are back. They don't ignore me, they use my head for a pylon when they play chase the birdie over who gets the feeder.

I used a Canon 100mm f2.8L IS macro on my Canon 7D mark II and 70D bodies. I now have a Sigma 180mm f2.8 OS macro on my Nikon D500. The Sigma provides extra reach for insects which are difficult to close in on; but the Canon is much lighter. If I had to choose between the two, I would go for the Sigma - the IQ of both lenses is brilliant but the extra reach of the Sigma seals it for me.

Hard to beat the canon 100mm f2.8 IS macro, check out the DxOMark lens test of the different macros.
