Bought a Tamron 24-70 f2.8 from a reputable camera chain store here in Canada. During the purchase the salesman asked if I would like to buy the extra insurance. Asked what it entailed and he said that would cover accidents and such which Tamron does not cover. Declined the offer and he mentioned I had 15 days to purchase same from time of lens date purchase. A few days later on a shot with a friend we were talking and he asked about my purchase and if I had bought ins. When I said I had declined, he said being the klutz that I am ,maybe I should rethink. The next day I called the store and purchased same.
Fast forward a couple of months and while taking the camera of the tripod, there she went. Camera was fine but can't say the same of the lens. When I took it to the store the conversation was like this, We will send the lens for repair. They will contact you with the price for the repairs MINUS 20 PERCENT which we will pay. HUH?????
[ME] What are you talking about?[ HIM] Did you not read the contract? [ME] What contract, you never sent me one,it was all done by phone and paid it with a credit card @#!&HEAD

Walked out and the wife stayed behind and gave them permission to IT send out. Today got a phone call and was told it would cost x number to replace the part of the busted barrel. Once I said OK she quickly cut the conversation short with her heavy accented english.
Looked at the call display and it was not a Tamron repair center and the name when I tried to search it would come up empty and there was no call back number on my phone. My personal gut feeling I think my lens is somewheres in India or Pakistan being repaired in somebody's garage.
One thing I know for sure is that H----'s camera store will never see my face again after 10 years and 4 cameras , a bunch of lens including 5 primes, a shitload of filters, extra batteries, tripods, camera bags,etc.etc.etc.

What they did to you is fraud. Call your credit card company and file a dispute for the purchase of the lens and the price you paid for the insurance. I'd also turn into your countries agency that regulates insurance and file a complaint against the store. You get all your money back. The other thing; would hide the name of the store; they deserve to be exposed!

WOW! Sorry to hear that! I bought a P100 Nikon no ins, was out at a lighthouse, I swear a ghost grabbed my ankle and through me to the ground smashing the camera, only thing I hurt was my pride and wallet! I was on vacation so I called a camera shop which we all seem to do business with, no more P100's so bought the P600 with drop and spill 4 year plan, camera developed a lens focusing problem. Called ins company they said send to repair shop with RMA number, camera from time of shipping to return 10 days, camera worked perfectly! The camera was ins'd for $600, cost of repair came out of that, camera is still ins'd for balance of the value and time! After that, camera, lenses all ins'd cause I am klutz Number 1. Repair done in Chicago. Cost if ibs? $43.00 per unit.

That is a bad story indeed. In fairness, you probably should have requested a copy of the Ts&Cs of the warranty, but 20% seems pretty paltry (worthless, outrageous, useless...). I'm sure you've read it now - does it really only cover 20% of any repairs, or am I reading your post incorrectly? Any reason you're reluctant to post the name of the dealer?

Yeah, keep the name secret so others can get screwed over too.
What good is a warning if you don't tell us who to be wary of?

Before purchasing the insurance, you really should have asked what it covers and how much it covers. Better yet, demanded a printed (or at very least e-mailed) copy of the insurance contract before paying anything. When it comes to insurance, never assume anything. Always know exactly what you are paying for.

Before you purchased the Extended Life Plan you should have looked at what it covered on Henry's website. It spells out exactly what is or is not covered. It plainly states that a camera that is returned to them with what they consider a "At Fault Damage" (water, sand or impact damage) they would only cover 20% of the repair cost. They are totally upfront with this information. The problem is that you failed to totally check out the coverage you were being offered. If your camera would have an electrical problem it would be covered 100% for the repairs, however, if you slam it into the ground you only get the 20%. To me that sounds fair. Again, before you purchase anything don't do it blind. Check it out😬😬

I insure my high dollar stuff with State Farm. When I had over $18,000 of cameras and guns (I am in Tennessee after all) the insurance was $230 per year. I dropped one of my $2,000 lenses from a trip on pavement, and the repair bill was $950. Completely covered. Why are you fooling around with a store insurance when real insurance can be had so cheaply?

ANY EXTENDED WARRANTY SHOULD BE REVIEWED BEFORE PURCHASE. Let the buyer beware. Just because you did not ask to see or knew the contract existed does not mean the company did anything wrong.

I can see where you feel blindsided. If anyone is going to sell insurance they should be able and required to give the prospective buyer a complete rundown on what is and what isn't covered and what if àny situations will result in less than full coverage. It is all well and good to say you should read the policy yourself but most policies would take a Philadelphia lawyer to understand. Sorry about your bad experience. Next time, Caveat Emptor.

Thanks for the heads up, HENRY'S is off my list of suppliers! I take customer service as being extremely important, more so than cost!

I have bought numerous lenses and cameras from Henry's with no problem. My last purchase was the Tamron 150-600 lens. I was offered the extended warranty. As the vast majority of problems I have had with equipment are due to my negligence, I inquired what the coverage is for breakage and was told 20%. Therefore, I did not purchase insurance. Interestingly, when I purchased my Nikon D500 Henry's was out of stock, so I got it from Vistek in Mississauga. Their extended warranty covers accidents, which is a good thing as I damaged the LED on the top of the camera (entirely my fault). The repair was fully covered by the insurance.

Hahersh, exactly the way my extended warranty worked, only cost was the purchase price, nothing when I dropped it!
