I'm interested...setting up my first studio right now. Will the strobe work without being wired to camera?

Yes it will. There are many transmitter/receiver setups that can be used. Yongnuo, Godox, and some China made generics will. I use the Pocket Wizard TT5 for my Canon 5D Mark III.

It's for sale as I have eight Photogenic monolights and find that I'm not using this one. Time to pass it on. Great value in a powerful monolight.

What do you use for portable power supply?

I have and use two different power supplies; the Photogenic ION inverter and the Flashpoint PS800 inverter and get great results from both, though the PS800 recycles faster and supports a total of 3,000w/s, which I've tested, but had no practical use for yet. The ION and two batteries have approximately the same reserve as the PS800 with one battery. Size and weight of the PS800 is double at 15 lbs. With either I can shoot anywhere I can set up independent of a 120v receptacle.
