2x converters suck. I had one, I used it on a 300 prime L, mounted on a 1ds mark iii. I hated it, and I sold it. I have a 1. 4 that I am not wild about either. You want a sharper image? Sell it, and use what God gave you, your feet. Walk closer to your subject. It is just that simple.

HA HA HA HA

So true .... longest lens I own is a 70-200 and I get some incredible bird pictures. 99% of what we share is on social media so you can crop the snot out of a picture, yup ... my 600mm is from PP :)

On vacation and just got to read. Two things I would do. Formula for shutter speed is 1/mm lens. At 400 mm the shutter should be 1/400 or faster. Your ISO was 500 and can easily go to 800 or more.

The 70-200L should be plenty sharp with the 2.0 extender on it. Some things to consider are:
1. You are shooting at f/5.6 which is wide open when using the extender. Lenses are not at their best wide open.
2. At 1/100 sec, subject motion can be a problem with these small birds and that can contribute to your problem.
3. at 560mm (the effective focal length) any vibration of the camera when shooting can cause some blur. Use a remote release.
4. ISOs between the multiples of 100, 200, 400, 800 can be a little more noisy due to digital enhancement thus robbing you of sharpness.
5. Depth of Field is very shallow at higher focal lengths, especially wide open. Always focus on the bird's eye. Move the focus point if you have the time.
6. Are you shooting at maximum resolution? Shooting at lower resolutions will not give the detail you want.
7. Is this photo cropped? If so, how much. This photo looks a bit noisy. Have you applied any noise filter or sharpened it?

I was going to say the same thing with regard to DOF. At 400mm at f5.6 at a distance of 20 ft the DOF is razor thing (less then 1/10 of an inch. Also at 400mm the minutest camera movement can induce softness at 1/100 Sec. I would set the camera at an ISO neededto get F-8 and 1/500. With the 7dmk2 an ISO of 400 or600 shouldn't be a problem. I have shots with the mk1 version at 800 ISO with very little noise.

His right foot is where your focus is the sharpest. Camera movement too. Since you are on a tripod, lock focus or pre-focus, mirror up, and remote release. On a solid tripod the speed could be kept at 1/200 or 1/250.

Hi, A high ISO never helps, always shoot RAW and do a little PP of your own.

I read thru the suggestions and I would go with a higher shutter speed and take care when focusing.

Enough on focus. I think this is a good example of degrading an image with the 2X. To boot I see moire' in the feathers that appears as OOF, but is no more than sensor ability taxed to max. Feathers are challenging with any camera/lens combination. My suggestion is to ditch the 2X in favor of the 1.4X for increased results. If you're wanting to know they're reviewed and compared extensively. Don't expect perfection with any extender is my final advice. I've found even the 1.4X left me desiring better IQ, so I have since been pleased for choosing a Tamron SP 150-600 VC (first edition) to pair to my 7D and 5D Mark III. Shooting RAW at 600mm f/8. The IQ is tack sharp compared to the softness of images when I shot a 70-200 with a 1.4X on the 7D. Of course, AFMA pre-calibrated and shot from my heavy Gitzo tripod at appropriate ISO and shutter speed. Still some moire' but a lot less. If you shoot a line test pattern with any combination you'll see moire' at at some level. This could be used for a comparison right in front of you.
