I was wondering how I can improve on my night shots like this one. I am using a Nikon D3400 with the 18-55 lense. Any suggestions?

Use a flash next time!

Thank you! I am looking into a flash to add to the camera that would give me better control over the built in flash. Any recommendations?

Shoot in Raw and then use the shadows slider in Photoshop to bring out the shadows. Increasing the ISO is maybe an easier way.

Did you use a tripod? If not that would be my first purchase if you do not already have one.

We have no idea of settings you used so it is somewhat hard to give anything but general tips. You seem to have taken a photo of the dark side of trees. A flash would open the shadows but what is there to be seen?

I would recommend the Nikon SB-700 Speedlight but if you want to get into more complicated flash photography get the Nikon SB-910.
You could have improved that night shot by "painting" the trees and foreground with light. Set the camera on a tripod, set the ISO at 100, set the exposure on Aperture priority and choose the smallest lens opening. You will get the proper exposure for the lit area of the picture and have a long shutter speed which would allow you to manually fire off some flashes from the speedlight to illuminate the foreground.

Tripod will help when using slow shutter speeds.
Higher ISO will introduce noise into your photos if you go too high. Depending on your ultimate use for the photo a little noise may not matter to you though.
You could use flash if silhouettes were not the goal. You had an image in mind when you took that photo right?
Experiment!
Check out some YouTube videos on your camera for tips as well.
Above all, have fun with it.

I have a Canon T3I. If that flash does not do the trick....tough luck. Too much trouble to carry/put on an additional flash for me!

Majic wands don't get rid of out of focus. Only a tripod and correct lighting will help.

I have a tripod, but it wasn't with me at the time. I plan to reshoot this picture using a tripod and flash. Thank you!

I have 2 Altura flashes that I bought from Amazon at a very good price. They work as well as my nikon SB-800

First: Get something in focus
second: use a tripod

I'm not sure what you want it to do.

Good idea but get it on a tripod and in focus.
