Presently I shot with a D800 which is a heavy camera. I am finding the regular neck strap to be quite tiring regardless of the lens attached. I am planning on a multi-hour hike to Gulf Hagas which is nearby and am seriously considering a sling-type strap that allows the camera to ride on my hip instead of on my chest. I know a lot of members like O-P. Any advice? How do these straps connect to the camera? Thanks.

I personally prefer sling type straps because neck straps are too uncomfortable and they make me look like a tourist.

If I use a "strap" it is only for tethering/accident insurance while shooting - I never use a strap for carrying the camera/lens - too dangerous IMO - instead, I use a LARGE soft lens or holster case belted to my body and also using a shoulder strapping system like this -

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Boat-Fishing-Fighting-Belt-Rod-Holder-Adjust-Fishing-Fishing-Harness-Vest-T9O0/401140607072?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

to hold it up/additional support. The Camera/lens is carried with the lens in the case or holster where it does not swing around and is protected - and still accessible fairly quickly - but not as fast as a neckstrap.

Utility sling strap from OpTech USA. NOTHING BETTER, at any price, and it's under $30.

I was never really into camera straps, I found them a awkward when I wanted to remove them from the
camera body to take macro shots and putting the strap back on the camera time consuming, that is
until I saw this video:

I can highly recommend them.

Sold. Looked at the video and found some others. Love the idea of the quick disconnect tabs. I was shooting late one night with a tripod in a wind and my strap was flapping in the breeze and shaking the whole rig. This would of saved the shoot as I didn't want to disassemble the strap in the dark. Thanks.

I like the peakdesign slide alot. I combine it with their wrist strap too for greater flexibility and camera safety when you want to take the strap off your shoulder.
The slide comes in regular for heavier DSLRs and a Lite version for smaller mirrorless cameras. The snap offs are really handy.

Blackrapid or any copycat, there's multiple variations of the best one, look at the sport version it stays better in place and there's also a two rigs model available

Peak Design. They have everything from sling straps to clips that you can use on a backpack strap or your belt, and they all work together.
