I use this for my macro work: https://www.amazon.com/Neewer-15cmX20cm-Universal-Collapsible-Panasonic/dp/B00JQU0W08/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498419710&sr=8-1&keywords=flash+diffusers+6+x+8

For on-camera use when I can't bounce, my favorite is the Light Scoop by LiteGenius.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/811481-REG/LITE_GENIUS_LITE_SCOOP_Lite_Scoop_Flash_Modifier.html
They make several sizes and work pretty well when the camera is in the vertical orientation too. I haven't used a flash bracket in years.

Those little snap-on caps included with some speedlights do practically nothing to soften the light unless you are in a place where the light can be bounced off of nearby ceilings and/or walls. They help spread the light for wider coverage but on their own, do nothing to soften the light.
Softening requires making the light bigger.

For off-camera use (with radio remotes) I like these

Use the normally useless snap on cap with these to even out the light.

(BTW, a diffuser modifies light.
A defuser is something that requires a call to the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit.)

Thanks for the comments, and I'm sorry I spelled "diffuser" wrong I'm a lousy speller. I'm considering going with the Garyfong diffuser though I am still experimenting as the price for that piece of plastic is a bit out there. Has anyone had any experiance with this product?

We used to just take a piece of white paper or index card and attach it to the flash head with a rubber band. Worked just fine.

I have the 8 inch diameter Vello Octa Softbox that I attach to my Nikon SB-700 flash. It has an additional diffuser inside that can be unfolded for more diffusion. They make a 12 inch diameter version of it as well. If I'm careful, I can use it for fill flash with natural looking results without the harshness that is often seen when using a flash. I used it for an outdoor model photo shoot on a farm this morning. I took this photo with the Octa Softbox on my flash with -1EV flash compensation.

Gary Fong makes a lot of money for selling what some people accomplish with a styrofoam cup. There are a lot of diffusers out there - I have used the little opaque plastic ones that fit over the flash with good results. Also a bounce deflector and a mini-softbox. All work well.

Thank you, CO, this is the type of shot I'm looking for. Nice fill no harsh shadows or bright spots. The portability of this softbox is also what I'm looking for. Thank you for the link and your suggestion.

If I am inside I usually reverse my flash head and aim it UP and BEHIND me, gives great defused light. Out side I use the little pop up white card that comes with my SB900 and let that bounce my flash into the subject. I also have defuser globes that fit over the flash head, I have used these both inside and out but my go to inside is aiming the flash head UP and BEHIND me, you would be pleased with this.

I use Neil van Nierk's black foamy thing, a half snoot for bouncing the light from my SB700 and also use A Better Bounce Card (large).

There is some good info on this thread:
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-469049-1.html

Definition of Opaque:
not transparent or translucent; impenetrable to light; not allowing light to pass through.

I use an opaque plastic glass (after drinking the beer and washing the glass, of course) placed over my speed light which I point upwards.
