The future is coming, whether you like it, or not. And, all your old stuff will be passé.
Try holding you breath until it gets here.
I have no need to hold my breath. The fact is that it is already here.
A camera must have a device to focus light onto a plane or spherical surface and we call that device a lens. Every camera from your Android phone to the Hubble telescope has a device that functions as the lens. The very difference between the Hubble and your phone camera is the lens - the lens is part of the creative system of the camera, and without the ability to control the shape and size of the lens, you are only able to take pictures.
Your phone may be able to replace the 35mm body, but it will never be a camera without a lens. Your OPA is replacing glass as the component material for the lens; if you read the article carefully, you will see that.
How doesn't the phrase "electronics replaces optics" mean what you are saying?
Lensless cameras have been around forever. They are known as 'Pinhole Cameras'. They produce images with fuzzy focus. Thanks but no thanks. Been there, done that, won't do it again.
But this one goes from fisheye to 600mm (+) zoom with electronic focus. Might be a little pricey but could end GAS.
Looks like it might possibly be a bigger change in camera technology than the film to digital change. The mind boggles at the possibilities.
Whether this will be an eventual revolution in cameras for the average person cannot be predicted right now. Price will be the decider.
