I have a Nikon d3000 I would like to upgrade. Most of my photos are of wildlife and high speed equine events
For my money I would opt for the Nikon D500.

The price on that is not "1500 or under" as per OP's request.
The Nikon D7200 is pretty darn good for his purpose. I'm sure Canon hassome candidates, but I know very little about Canon models.

Canon 7d Mark II body only - $1,499 per Amazon.
Without a doubt the Nikon d500 is the best camera for what you want to do but it is 500 over your budget with body only.
I have a Nikon d7100 that I shoot wild life with and would like to upgrade to 720o. If you can stetch just a little I would go with the d7500
Here's what dp review has to say about this caliber of camera

What lenses do you have? {this will affect your total cost, depending on whether they would work with a new camera, so you need to be fairly precise}
There are very good results coming from the "Bridge" Cameras like the Sony RX100III, Panasonic FZ2500 and the Panasonic FZ1000.
I keep thinking of things you should know. Go to the top of this page and in blue print find 'SEARCH' works like Google. Put in something like best camera for wildlife and it will come up with all the posts relating to that subject.
Again WELCOME and GOOD LUCK
D7500 no question.
I'm using mine right now for action / wildlife (working on a review) and while it's not on par with the D500, it's a noticeably better action camera than the D7200 (which I also own). Not only does it do 8FPS, it also has a much deeper buffer, Group AF, and better 3D AF. For moderate action, it's the best you can get for under $1500. That said, the D500 (I own that one too) is still a better choice for action if you can swing the extra $$.

The Nikon D7200 would be a good choice and your Nikon lenses will work on it.

My guess is your gonna stay with Nikon?
If you're willing to move, the Canon 7Dmkll can be bought for $1000 used and a used 100-400mkl for as low as $600. That is an awesome daylight nature set-up!!
Yes that's a $100 more but if you're serious it's a cheap nature combo.
When you can afford it, add a used 1.4x mkll for about $250.
You can use that camera with inexpensive but fast SD cards too!
Good luck

Silly me for making a human error and missing the price in the title. Consider me properly horse whipped, tarred and feathered.
On the other hand many times when buying cameras, high grade firearms or even knives I have set a limit for myself and then gone over that limit when I found out there was a specialized item that more likely fit my needs and/or wants. For my money (maybe the O/P's as well) the D500 would be the best choice even if he had to save longer. I guess that is up to him to decide.

Most definitely the Nikon D500. I own one and it would take a monster upgrade for me to change. I also own an Olympus EM1 mark II and previously owned a Canon 7D mark II: but for out and out wildlife photography in your price range I don't believe anything beats the D500 - especially combined with a Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6.

Right, although wasn't the D500 on sale for $1,500 about a week ago?
