Before you buy, see what your library has available. If you find something especially good, look for it online.

This may have been the best advice you received here.

Yes... Down-Loading, anything, can get you problems. So with that said - KNOW your source. Always KNOW.

The [PDF] files that I D.L. are good - as I can tell the difference. One again KNOW the source.

When I pass on ANY [PDF], I KNOW that it is true and good. I just do NOT pass along the LINK to the site (sometimes I do IF that is What the person wants). I send files that have been through a good "scrubbing" and do Not contain CRAP linking to ANYTHING. Some people like the link - Well! They might be taking a chance. However those as well have been checked and are good that I have on file.

One does take the chance with the links - With total files, no. I will send to anyone that wants them good and true [PDF] files for their edification, education and help. Never ever had problems.

Sorry if you did. Check them before just Jumping in.

The file that I am intending to send is a [PDF] of Bryan Peterson's books - I have most of what he had written. Just "Private Message" me and I shall send.

I'm not talking about that stuff. I'm talking about the information itself. So much of it is just wrong.

Thank you for that = I have added that to my collection.

The one thing here is that I think that the O.P. was looking for something a little more "compact" and for the here and now on the operation of a camera. Since the O.P. did not indicate the camera that (he she) is making use of, we can only estimate on what to advise. "Understanding Exposure, Bryan Peterson - is a book that will do that for anyone with any camera.

And Then there is This=

The OP has this to say if you check his posts: "I am new at photography and have used a D5300 the past year. My wife just purchased a D500 for me as a surprise for an upcoming trip. She heard me talking about it. Looking for constructive criticism as I want to grow my skills."

That may help the context of the discussion. Perhaps something that covers the basics without being a three year degree course, with some specific reference to Nikon and the D500 would be a good place to start.

No, it does not - for that I recommend "Camera & Craft" on Focal Press ......

Below seems to be the latest ( 3rd) version of the "Photographers Handbook" and probably the most pertinent for today. The illustrations are EXCELLENT and they are what set this resource apart from others !

That is why to read reviews and pay attention to authors. The 'best' one have web sites to check.

I would be very leery of anything that was downloaded from the net. I had the misfortune to be housebound for a week or so with nothing better to do than peruse the net, and most of the stuff that I found was not just bad, but down right wrong. It may sound good to those that don't know better but most of what I found was parroting of popular urban myths.

The books mentioned are great reference materials and should be in your library. However, do not forget the learning videos on YOUtube. Open up youtube and search for Adorama and you will see the hundreds of videos that cover everything for beginners to pros. You can subscribe and the new pop up in your inbox and watch if the subject you. I find Bryan Peterson a great teacher along with the other folks on the Adorama learning channel.

Once past the basics, I recommend the Digital Photography series by Scott Kelby.

There are a multitude of books on basic photography. When I just started, there was a DVD course available from "The Great Courses" called the f
Fundamentals of Photography 1 and 2. They sell for under $100. The dvd's featured Joel Santore, a National George photographer. I believe they are still available. They take you through all basics and also some intermediate materiel. It was much more valuable following along with camera in hand. Judge for yourself.

I have read many photography books. All of which has helped me along my digital journey. Found the most helpful to me was Tony Northrup's How to create Stunning Digital Photography and Lightroom 6/CC. Great reading and lot of good tips. Easy to understand and lots of video included for a very reasonable cost.
