One of the most comprehensive summations that I have is BDM's Complete Guide to Digital Photography, A guide for Beginners.

Avery good starting point that covers a lot of ground.

This is published in the UK and there are newer versions on their website, but for more $$

All the books written by John Shaw have at least one chapter on basics of photography. They were all written when we were using film but the basics remain the same.
His books are full of examples using the camera for landscape and close-up photography with brief technical explanations.
If you can get good instructions through classes I believe that would be the best way to learn but using one of the many books dedicated to basic photography should reinforce your photographic knowledge.
Good luck!

For the "Basics" I would look at some online tutorials before buying a book. Once you understand the real basics you will be better equipped to chose a book. Too many books on basics add a lot of BS to fill the pages or go way beyond the basics.

Here is a quick yet informative example:

Try alibris.com. They have used books at good prices. Photo theory hasn't changed.

I like the Photo Workshop series by Wiley publishers. Each book deals with a topic, such as composition, exposure, nature photography, etc. Pick the topics you are interested in and buy the books one at a time.

A good online course is "Basic Photography" with John Greengo at creativelive.com covers ALL the basics. Very well done. I've got 15 photography credits from college and I thought this course was excellent.

Before you buy, see what your library has available. If you find something especially good, look for it online.
