Still the best candidate for best jazz album of all time. Everything is right about "Kind of Blue." Thanks for posting!

Totally agree. It's an unbelievable album with unimaginable talents orchestrating & performing. I can't imagine life without it.

Also, the history of how it was recorded should be a model for today's recording artists. The studio was a wonderful church in Manhattan, which became legendary as a model of recorded sound from that era. Back when great players, great tunes, great engineers, and record companies who were committed to preserving a part of history as a segment of their business was the norm.

Excellent comments. I'm sure you also remember the quality of live jazz programs on TV, back in the 50's - 70's. Money rules today. Quality and Creativity have taken a back seat. I feel very fortunate and blessed to have been alive and experienced those days.

Mark,
I love Miles Davis.

Just yesterday afternoon I had a senior moment with one of the younger generation. I went into our local general store (Provolt, Oregon) and 'Autumn' who was handling the cash register had a 'T' shirt with "Miles Ahead" on the front. I'm guessing it was signifying her age was low and she had miles to go with her life. Well, big mouth me had to say "ya know, there is a Miles Davis album titled with that same saying".....well she looked at me like who the hell is that and what are you saying?

I paid, and took my paper and cookie and left knowing I could never take enough time to explain how much Miles Davis influenced me when I was her age. I don't think she would have understood even if I took hours to explain.

Then today you write about Miles Davis. Amazing!

Alex,

That is a funny story!! It would have been impossible to explain to her. "Miles Ahead", should have been protected by copyright laws!! I did not like Miles' ventures into fusion and other later forms, but I certainly did admire his versatility. I learned to play bop and modern jazz by playing along with his earlier recordings. I was a "hacker", but I managed. Caught him at Birdland a few times. Those were the days - $2 - sit in the gallery all night and listen to jazz.

Being able to see Miles in person, especially at Birdland, which must have been 'up close and personal' makes you a lucky man.

I envy your experience.

Yes I am. Living 1 hour from NYC afforded me all the live jazz I had time for and could afford. In Birdland, 50's - early 60's, as well as various other clubs, hearing live jazz was easily obtained. Lots of concerts too.
