Been practicing for the eclipse that's come on 8-21-17..lenses are canon f2.8 300mm sigma 150 -600mm with telconverter 1.5 and 2. What would be the best settings..the settings here are 1/160 at f18 iOS 320 white balance is sun. Solar filter, sigma 150-600 with 2x. We have 12hour drive there and would like to get it right so any feed back would be appreciated..thank you

"iOS" is an Apple operating system. You may have intended to refer to "ISO 320" which is a measure of light sensitivity captured by your camera's sensor.

There are Astronomy clubs in (at least) Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Holland, Grand Rapids, and Muskegon. I would expect that there are those from every club that a) have done previous eclipses, and b) will be going to the premiere spots for this next eclipse. I know that Kalamazoo has had people travel to Antarctica, eastern Europe, and South Pacific Islands for previous eclipses. An Astronomy club is a limited feature Photography club with expensive lenses. Nothing better than carrying a 24-30 inch diameter piece of glass to your next shoot.

You will find these people to be the most friendly, most helpful people when you are pointing your camera up.

Why do I get the feeling he knows what ISO is and perhaps hit the wrong keys in identifying ISO.

I recently purchased a 16.5 f-stop ND Solar filter. I would like to find out if I need it on the camera during the totality phase. I know it is required to shoot the sun, but I want to be sure to capture the corona at totality. Any advice with this question and possible exposure factors would be appreciated.

You may want to get to your destination a day in advance, good viewing sites will be CROWDED. But motel reservations can be tough. A friend called for motels and found that they sold out for the eclipse 18 months ago!

Photo Phred:I can only say what I plan on doing. ISO will be 100, f/16, WB sun, shutter speed will be used to get the proper exposure.. Mirror up. Remote to trigger shutter, manual focus, solar filter on. When the moon covers the sun completely that's when I will remove the filter {about a minute} than back on. May under expose 2-3 stop..with that I hope to capture the corona..I'm hoping that wil do it.

That's great advice. Thanks camera man. I will be using a Nikon d7100 with a 70-300mm nikon lens. I don.t want to get it wrong. As to location, I am fortunate to have friends in Charlotte SC with a big house.

Leave the guy alone, like me he might have dyslexia, this is a photography forum, we all knew what he meant? And thanks for the setting suggestions.
