I recently sold an item here, and the buyer wanted to pay using PayPal. Because I had never had anyone pay me that way I asked for a check, which he sent. However, since I may sell other stuff here, I need to know how to accept PayPal payments. What information do I have to send to the buyer? I believe my PayPal ID is my email address.

You should either sent an invoice to your buyer (ask for their paypal email id), or sent them your Paypal email ID with the total due.

Easiest way is to go to the PayPal website to register if you haven't already. It will walk you through the process. Note that PayPal collects 3% up front for received payment but nothing for spending

All they have to do is log into PayPal and go to send money

It's unfortunate there are so many untrustworthy people in the world, but use paypal with caution. One of their tricks is to pay using PayPal, then when you tell them the item has been shipped, they cancel the payment.

go to Pay Pal, create an account, or if you have one, just log into that account.
You'll have to give the buyer your paypal info ( not passwords)
once he pays, you go to paypal and you should see the money in the paypal account.
From there you can spend it using paypal, at most on line places. I buy a lot from Amazon and ebay...
or you can have PP put it into your bank ( they should have your bank info when you created your account) , or send u a check.
They will charge you a fee, for processing the money.

That's not a scam that can work. Once payment is confirmed as received on the seller's end, if the buyer tries to retract the sale it just triggers an investigation. The worst case, PayPal may place a hold on the funds until the matter is resolved, and the payment is just not automatically cancelled on the buyer's say-so.

But there are other scams that sellers should be aware of. Unfortunately, the scam you describe isn't one of them.

Is this fee over and above the 3%?

I was leery of PayPal when I first heard of it, but I've had hundreds of transactions with it. You sign on with the company using your email address. People send money to your PP account, and PP deducts their fee. Whenever you want, you can transfer money to your bank account. It's fast and safe and available worldwide.

PayPal does not protect a seller who sells something on eBay for local pickup only. My wife was just cheated by someone who bought a furniture set from her on eBay, asked her if she would wait a few months before he picked it up; he paid her via PayPal and then, when he was scheduled to drive in from New Mexico to pick up the furniture, decided not to do so. PayPal refunded him the money even though my wife sent them numerous emails between her and the buyer showing his getting cold feet after months of delay.

I do not send the item until the payment has been confirmed by PP.

Early in the eBay and PayPal era I was ripped off royally. A seller sent thoroughly defective goods and both eBay and PayPal sided with the cheat. Both organizations refuse to cancel my accounts so I can not protect myself from imposters from running up bills in my name. Both are disreputable.

Also be wary of Pal Pal. I ordered some ram paid $100 and received the ram. Placed it into the pc and it wouldn't work in any way. As soon as I put my old ram in the pc worked. So I asked to return it and I did according to pay pal. My problem was that I didn't pay insurance on return. Pay Pal requested the Shipping code and I sent it to them. Then they said I gave them a wrong number and by then the time has elapsed to get a return. So I lost the ram and the $100.
